MOVIE NEWS

CASINO ROYALE

Major casting news on the new James Bond movie, with Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen (right), last seen in Danish black comedy
The Green Butchers, taking the role of main villain Le Chifre, British beauty Eva Green as Bond Girl Vesper Lynd and Jeffrey Wright (Broken Flowers) will take the recurring Bond role of Felix Leiter.

CAPTAIN AMERICA

Screenwriter David Self (Road To Perdition) has been tasked to script a movie based on 'Marvel' comic-book Captain America.

INDIANA JONES 4

Steven Spielberg has broken his few months of silence on the likelihood of a fourth Indiana Jones movie, saying: "I haven’t given up making entertaining films, but over the last decade I have been making some films that express the respect I have for history. I am about to make Indiana Jones 4, which is, as far as I am concerned, the sweet dessert I give those who had to chow down on the bitter herbs that I’ve used in Munich."

BRITISH ACADEMY AWARDS 2006

Was it just me or is Stephen Fry's prattling beginning to become tiresome? I think it would be a wise decision to dump Fry for 2007 and bring in some fresh blood. There are only so many overcomplicated descriptive sentences you can take before it becomes less humourous and more frustrating.

Anyway, regardless of Stephen Fry's repetitive hosting style, the results for 2006 were:

  • Best Score: John Williams, Memoirs Of A Geisha
  • Best Make-Up and Hair: Chronicles Of Narnia
  • Animated Short: Fallen Art
  • Costume Design: Colleen Atwood, Memoirs Of A Geisha
  • Live Action Short: Antonio’s Breakfast
  • Best Sound: Walk the Line
  • Production Design: Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire.
  • The Orange Rising Star Award: James McAvoy
  • Special Visual Effects: King Kong
  • Foreign Language Film: The Beat That My Heart Skipped.
  • Carl Forman Award (First Time Filmmaker): Joe Wright, Director, Pride and Prejudice.
  • Editing: Claire Simpson, The Constant Gardener.
  • Michael Balkan Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema: Chuck Finch and Billy Merrell – Gaffer and Best Boy.
  • Actor in a Supporting Role: Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain.
  • Original Screenplay: Paul Haggis and Bobby Moresco, Crash.
  • Actress in a Supporting Role: Thandie Newton, Crash
  • Adapted Screenplay: Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, Brokeback Mountain.
  • Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film: Wallace and Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
  • Best Cinematography: Dion Beebe, Memoirs of a Geisha
  • The David Lean Award for Achievement in Direction: Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain.
  • Actress in a Leading Role: Reese Witherspoon, Walk The Line.
  • Actor in a Leading Role: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote.
  • Best Film: Brokeback Mountain
  • The Fellowship of the British Academy: David Puttnam

No major surprises then, just disappointing that Brokeback Mountain dominated everything (it's not THAT great, is it?) and a lot of British entries were ignored. Also a little annoying that many of the nominated movies have yet to be released here or failed at the US box office (Good Night And Good Luck, Capote, Memoirs Of A Geisha, etc.).
