DAN'S MOVIE DIGEST

I s s u e # 5 0

0 4 J u l y 2 0 0 3

Wow! The 50th Issue! Time certainly does fly!

I really hope everyone out there enjoys this little corner of Dom's DVDfever - as I receive precious little feedback. One e-mail and counting...

I assume people like DMD, as Dom hasn't told me to stop wasting my time each week, but it would be nice to know if anyone makes this a regular stopping point on the 'net. Hint, hint ;)

Anyway, I think DMD will continue for the time being, as it's not yet eating into too much of my time - just 20 mins each day, which isn't bad. Unless you remember that's equal to 2 hrs 20 mins per week! But, hey, there are some days when nothing happens (beyond the umpteenth Superman director rumour!)

Oh, and if anyone has an ideas, suggestions, or insider scoops they'd like to pass onto me, that would be most welcome, too!

Enjoy,
Dan

BATMAN 5

Director Christopher Nolan is still attached, as is screenwriter David Goyer (Blade II). The latest candidate for the role of Bruce Wayne is Demi Moore's toyboy Ashton Kutchner (right) (Dude, Where's My Car?), despite Nolan preferring Guy Pearce (Memento). It appears Nolan has until late August to find his lead actor, which insiders predict will be a relative unknown (similar to Sam Raimi's decision to cast Tobey Maguire for Spider-Man).

Interestingly, Michael Gough looks likely to reprise his role as Alfred - meaning he will have starred in every Batman movie since 1989.

BROTHERS GRIMM

'Screen Daily' reports that Terry Gilliam's $75 million fantasy comedy has begun its 17-week shoot in Prague. Czech towns and castles such as Krivoklat, Kacina, Kutna Hora and Ledec will double for 19th Century Germany.

Matt Damon, Heath Ledger and Jonathan Pryce lead the impressive cast but both Robin Williams and Nicole Kidman had to drop out of appearing.

THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK

'Universal Pictures' has announced the start of principal photography on the science fiction action-adventure epic The Chronicles of Riddick, starring Vin Diesel and co-starring Colm Feore, Alexa Davalos, Karl Urban, Linus Roache, Thandie Newton and Dame Judi Dench.

The film has been written and directed by David Twohy (Pitch Black) with Vin Diesel reprising his Pitch Black role of enigmatic anti-hero Richard B. Riddick.

In the new movie, Riddick has spent the last five years on the move among the forgotten worlds on the outskirts of the galaxy, eluding mercenaries bent on collecting the price on his head. Now, the fugitive finds himself on planet Helion, home to a progressive multicultural society, which has been invaded by the Lord Marshal (Feore), a zealot who targets humans for subjugation with his army of warriors known as Necromongers.

Exiled to a subterranean prison where extremes of temperature range from arctic nights to volcanic days, Riddick encounters Kyra (Davalos), the lone survivor from an earlier chapter in his life. His efforts to free himself and Kyra lead him to the Necromonger command ship, where he is pitted against the Lord Marshal in an apocalyptic battle with possibly the fate of all beings-both living and dead-hanging in the balance.

FANTASTIC FOUR

'Coming Attractions' reports that the production company working on 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four is scouting locations in Canada, focusing on either Toronto or Vancouver.

INDIANA JONES 4

Strangely, 'Empire' magazine have a supposed quote from Sean Connery saying: "Steven Spielberg has passed on directing the next Indiana Jones movie".

So is Connery correct, or deluded? It does seem strange that after months of Spielberg hyping the project and Frank Darabont's screenplay that he's simply walk off the production...

LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN II

Screenwriter Shane West spoke to 'Starlog' magazine about the possibility of a sequel to The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. West: "If this is a franchise - how can I say this without giving everything away? - I think there might be different characters created."

"We could try the whole Martian War Of The Worlds thing in the sequel [The storyline for the second comic-book series]. I know they've mentioned that as a possibility. And we may shoot in Australia next time. But that's about all I know".

TEAM AMERICA

South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are set to make an adult puppet show similar to Thunderbirds called Team America.

The duo told 'Variety' that their "cast will be deliberately made of wood, but that will only be taking to the extreme what is evident in many Hollywood movies right now. I hate all these new Hollywood films that are CGI-driven. Trey and I loved that Thunderbirds series because of the artistry of the marionettes. It's amazing that a studio would make a movie out of it and take out the only thing that was good about the series."

RESIDENT EVIL 2

Emily Bergl (Carrie 2: The Rage, right) is tipped to play Claire Redfield in the sequel, with filming scheduled for a mid-August.

RUSH HOUR 3

Chris Tucker is in talks to reprise his role as Detective James Carter in Rush Hour 3. Interestingly, this is the only film role the actor has played since the first Rush Hour movie was released in 1998!

Brett Ratner is set to direct the third instalment, but there's still no word on when co-star Jackie Chan will start his negotiations. Rush Hour 3's script has been written by Jeff Eastin, Ross LaManna and Jason Richman.

SHREK 2

Jeffrey Katzenberg has been talking about the storyline to Shrek 2: "[It's] about coming to terms with the fact that everything that happened in the first Shrek was a gigantic mistake. Shrek was not meant to rescue Fiona. Her true love was meant to be Prince Charming. There was a whole plan of what was going to happen to Fiona, her future and her kingdom, and Shrek has made a fine mess of all of it."

"It begins with an invitation from Fiona's mom and dad, who, you recall, locked her away in a castle to await Prince Charming's kiss".

Amazingly, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will each be getting a massive $10 million each to record their 15-20 hours of voice-over work, plus an extra £20 million each if the film is a success!

STAR WARS EPISODE III

The 'Star Wars Insider #69' magazine revealed some details about Episode III, confirming the following: "Anakin Skywalker won't have a beard in Episode III. Yoda's homeworld or species will not be revealed. No rematch between Yoda and Dooku though both will have their own fights. Temuera Morrison won't be seen as a clone trooper. No extra shots of Natalie Portman will be put in the classic trilogy."

TIME COP 2

'JAM Movies' spoke with Jason Scott Lee (Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story) about his starring role in Timecop 2 - the sequel to the Jean-Claude Van Damme hit. Lee insisted that "there was no pressure whatsoever" about stepping into Van Damme's shoes. "It's not like I studied martial arts from the time I was a child -- which I think he did. I was a surfer. I only learned martial arts to play Bruce Lee in Dragon."

TRUE LIES 2

James Cameron isn't so eager to film a sequel to True Lies in a post-9/11 world, and Arnold Schwarzenegger has revealed the screenwriting issues behind the movie, saying: "The script is written, but as you know, after 9/11 happened, [Jim] Cameron was worried because there's an airplane scene - a terrific airplane scene - that didn't have anything to do with the terrorism that we had in 9/11, but it was a great fight scene inside the plane while the plane goes down and this kind of thing. It was a very important moment in the movie, and he felt like he can't do that and therefore has to rewrite it... these things take a long time."
