MOVIE NEWS

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3

Keri Russell (right) has replaced Scarlett Johannesen in M:I-3, which is due out next summer. She will play a trainee agent, alongside Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Michelle Monaghan and Ving Rhames.

HITMAN

Vin Diesel (Pitch Black) has agreed to take the lead role of Agent 47 in Hitman, based on the best-selling video game.

PROJECT 880

James Cameron (Titanic) will start in December on his next big-budget film, which could either be Battle Angel or a parallel project, tentatively titled Project 880.

'The Hollywood Reporter' says both films would be shot in 3-D with custom-designed high-definition cameras. Whichever film Cameron does next, he also plans to use a photo-real version of the performance capture technology used by Robert Zemeckis on The Polar Express.

Battle Angel is based on Yukito Kishiro's 12 popular Japanese graphic novels about a nymphette who morphs into an action heroine. Cameron has reworked a script from Alexander screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis that could serve as the beginning of a franchise.

Eager to use the latest technology toolbox on his next film, which will be effects intensive, Cameron has had a team of technicians working behind-the-scenes to build customized solutions that will enable the director to bring his visions to the big screen.

'The Hollywood Reporter' adds that Cameron will deploy the same side-by-side, 3-D high-definition video 'Sony' cameras that he used on Ghosts Of The Abyss on his upcoming feature. Cameron also hopes to release his next film in 1,000 theatres equipped with digital projectors.

SHOOT 'EM UP

Clive Owen (Sin City) is in final negotiations for a pay-or-play deal to star in Shoot-Em-Up for 'New Line Cinema', says 'Variety'.

The trade says the ultra-violent film will start production in January, from writer-director Michael Davis. The movie would feature Owen as a mysterious man protecting a newborn baby from criminals out to kill it. Set pieces include a shootout during a sex scene and another in the midst of a freefall.

The studio is targeting a holiday 2006 release.

WOLVERINE

Hugh Jackman is close to signing on to a Wolverine spin-off movie to the X-Men franchise, with a producing role included in the deal.
