MOVIE NEWS

BASIC INSTINCT 2

Sharon Stone (right) told 'Access Hollywood' that her character, Catherine Tramell, will have a bisexual relationship in the sequel Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction.

Stone: "There is lesbian love. We're testing for her now."

Stone said she was surprised at the attention her interrogation scene in the original 1992 Basic Instinct movie received: "People still want to see some more of that." When asked if that was the plan for the sequel, she smiled and replied: "You can spend your $12 and go find out for yourself."

In the follow-up slated for release in 2006, Catherine relocates from San Francisco to London and quickly finds herself on the wrong side of the law.

David Morrissey (TV's Blackpool) plays a criminal psychologist assigned the task of evaluating her by Scotland Yard, and she may finally have met her match in the shrink.

DIE HARD 4.0

'Empire Online' spoke to Bruce Willis about the Die Hard 4.0 script, who said that: "Doug Richardson, who wrote Hostage, took a shot at Die Hard 4.0 and it's a good idea. The script will be done by summer and they want to shoot it in the fall. McClane's retired, he's not a cop anymore.

It's completely different from the other three films. The only one of the other three films that I thought had any merit to it was the first one. Actually, in the third one I think Sam Jackson's work was really strong."

And why Die Hard 4.0? "Well, it has something to do with computers..."

CASINO ROYALE

Actor Julian McMahon (TV's Nip/Tuck, right) is apparently a front-runner for the 007 role in Casino Royale. The 36-year-old Australian reportedly said: "I'm a big James Bond fan. I met the producers for a final audition. They told me to expect a decision in a couple of months and they said it was between me and one other person. It's going to be a very nervous wait."

Another late contender is British actor Daniel Craig (Layer Cake) and Clive Owen (Closer), who has been long associated with claiming the Bond title.

In related news, speaking to the 'New York Daily News', director Martin Campbell (Goldeneye) revealed the concept behind Casino Royale and how the character will be unlike anything we have seen before.

Campbell: "There are things that will have to be changed from the original novel. The Cold War elements will have to be reconfigured, for example, but Casino Royale will be a grittier, tougher and more realistic Bond movie. We'll be getting away from the huge visual effects kind of films."

"In the new film, Bond is essentially starting out in his career, and has just recently become part of the double-0 section. The idea is to put a bit of the dash back in Bond. By the end of the movie, the character will have been forged into the wiser, harder Bond we know."

"The door is open for Bond, emotionally. He's in love with Vesper [Lynd] and he sees there's another side to all of this, that life might be far more pleasurable, more gratifying, than being a secret agent. And ultimately that door is slammed in his face, which makes him the tempered steel kind of guy that we know."

On the subject of the graphic torture that Bond suffers at the hands of Le Chiffre, Campbell said: "I don't know what we're going to do about that. It ranks up there with the teeth-drilling scene in Marathon Man. I'm looking forward to humanizing Bond a bit. In the novel, Bond smokes 70 cigarettes a day - unbelievable. And he gets a little drunk."

Now, for my own personal thoughts on the main winners...

BEST PICTURE - Million Dollar Baby
Good film, but not the Best Movie of 2004. This will go down in history as a well-made boxing movie that most people haven't seen and I'm sure competition like The Aviator and even Ray will beat it in DVD sales. A big injustice - just look at the filmmaking chops required for The Aviator and compare with Baby!

BEST ACTOR - Jamie Foxx, Ray
A justifiable win, although some may claim it's relatively easy to impersonate an actual person, but it's actual more difficult I think. Halle Berry and Denzel Washington have quite rightly opened the floodgates for ethnic winners now, and Foxx has reaped the reward.

BEST ACTRESS - Hilary Swank, Million Dollar Baby
Yes, good performance, although Imelda Staunton's acting in Vera Drake is much better - just not quite Oscar material.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR - Morgan Freeman, Million Dollar Baby
It's about time Freeman took home a statue, and the performance is good - just not one of his best. For my money, Clive Owen should have won - but perhaps after his Golden Globe and BAFTA success, the Oscar was one too many.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Cate Blanchet, The Aviator
A good choice, and another winner who's basically playing an existing person! A deserved win - for once!

BEST DIRECTOR - Clint Eastwood, Million Dollar Baby
No way. Clint's good, but Baby is below-par for him, really, and it's nowhere near as well-directed as Martin Scorsese's The Aviator. A great injustice for Mr Scorsese.

So, overall - a good Oscars because there wasn't one obvious movie to dominate things and the choice of movies were all of a high quality. Unfortunately, there's a big Clint love-in in Hollywood and this meant a good movie (Million Dollar Baby) did far better than it deserved to. It was even more cruel to see The Aviator snubbed - and Scorsese missing out on that long-deserved award. Maybe next year...
