Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble: Live at the El Mocambo is a performance featuring the late guitarist performed at the Toronto venue and is definitely one for the jaaazz-club generation...

'Great'.

His brother Jimmie stated that Stevie "Never played it the same way once, much less twice". This performance contains four tracks never released on an album in Vaughan's lifetime before his untimely death in 1990, plus music from Double Trouble's early catalogue, Love Struck Baby, Pride and Joy and Mary Had a Little Lamb, not to mention a couple of Jimi Hendrix tracks, for he was Stevie's hero, Third Stone from the Sun and Voodoo Chile.

'Nice'.

By the way, Double Trouble are not to be confused with the UK dance outfit from 1989 who had hits such as Just Keep Rockin' and Street Tuff with the Rebel MC, who, apparently was "tough like a ninja" and "rough like a razor blade".

'Smooooooth'

Standard 4:3 fullscreen (well, it was shot in 1983) and I have no complaints as the picture is free of artifacts, but the obvious NTSC-PAL conversion leaves it looking not particularly focused.

Released in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound with PCM Stereo as an alternative option, the sound is very good, but the DD5.1 doesn't particularly add anything to the performance.

Extras etc. :

Chapters :

There are 14 chapters, one for each song as well as the intro sequence and closing credits. The track listing is as follows :

      1. Programme Start
      2. Testify
      3. So Excited
      4. Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)
      5. Pride and Joy
      6. Tell Me
      7. Mary Had a Little Lamb
      8. Texas Flood
      9. Love Struck Baby
      10. Hug You Squeeze You
      11. Third Stone from the Sun
      12. Lenny
      13. Wham!
      14. End credits

Languages/Lyrics :

All the tracks with lyrics are sung in English - although there's plenty of instrumental moments - and you can singalongaStevie onscreen.

And there's more... :

The Timeline describes the career highlights from 1983-1999 for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, from his Texas Flood album in 1983, his tragic death in a helicopter crash in the early hours of August 27th, 1990, through to remastered albums in 1999 including a second Greatest Hits release.

The Discography is merely a set of small pictures of each album he's been involved with while still alive and posthumously and the extras are complete with a 22-minute Interview with Double Trouble, recorded in October last year.

Menu :

Animated with music - Stevie playing the riff from Voodoo Chile.

Overall, it's a good performance we have here but with few extras it's a disc that can only be recommended to those who are guaranteed to watch this over and over again.
