Kiseki
Rei Rei / The Gigolo is one of the first Anime titles to be released by Kiseki via Revelation for the UK DVD market and contains two episodes of the former, totalling 55 minutes, plus The Gigolo, a 45-minute adventure for the cartoon beefcake. Dead Girls Can't Talk is the first tale about Rei Rei: The Sensual Evangelist, which brings us into the realms of Manga's answer to Dr. Harold Shipman as no-one here gets out alive. Where Dr. Manami differs though is that she has seduced and corrupted innocent schoolgirl Ikuko before bumping her off and the little dead girl can only be helped by Goddess of Love, Kaguya and Ikuko's boyfriend. In The Lover's Guide, Satoshi is getting nowhere with Mika as he's scared of women and needs a good teacher in the form of Kaguya, the Prophetess of Passion, before going back to Mika and introducing her to the big "O" (er.. not Roy Orbison). The Gigolo has muscles, huge muscles. Muscles that would only exist in a Mr. Universe contest in fact. He's 22 and is enticed into winning a sports car as long as he can help Ai Mizushima to "make me scream with pleasure", although it sounds like she has no trouble with that every time she says her first name ("Aiyeee"). There's also a plot, in which people get shot and I'm a poet but I don't know it.
The Doctor is "in"...
There's no visible artifacts and things look as good as they should, but the Japanese style of animation on display here is reminiscent of Battle of the Planets, but with added sex. Presented in a 4:3 fullscreen ratio, the average bitrate is a fine 5.54Mb/s. The sound is pretty sparse containing dialogue in the respective language, twee music and bizarre special effects sounds that seem to have come from the aforementioned cartoon.
"Well, I was told it was THIS big!"
Extras :
Chapters :There's 4 chapters covering both episodes of Rei Rei at the rate of 2 apiece and another 4 for The Gigolo.
Languages & Subtitles :Rei Rei contains Japanese dialogue and burnt-in English subtitles which occasionally obscure the 'action', while The Gigolo is dubbed into English with no subtitles available.
Menu :The menu is static and silent only offering you the chance to start either programme or select a chapter.
Overall, it's good to see that we have a double feature here, but the whole thing makes for rather disappointing viewing. The plots are hardly complex and any sex scenes, which we're presumably meant to watch this for, are short-lived and seem to have been cropped to avoid seeing too much (so as to appease the BBFC presumably). Oh, apparently the Japanese don't like seeing pubic hair so there's none of that for the characters to floss their teeth with.
