Fancy spending over an hour in the company of a delightful and beautiful young lady ? Then tuck into this.
Diminutive MOR Jazz queen Katie Melua’s 4 x platinum album Call Off The Search is now available as a special limited edition
double pack. A DVD, that includes a full length intimate live concert, as well
as the original album on CD. Released to coincide with the final stage of her
debut UK tour, the package gives you her best-selling album, and DVD
featuring interviews and promotional filming.
In effect, it’s a peek at the golden girl at work and on her travels, which
includes a shoot in the States (for Crawling Up A Hill) and the Coronet
Cinema at the Elephant and Castle London for the three singles she’s had great
success with.
She revisits Moscow’s Red Square, a place she hasn’t been to since she was two
years old. This time it’s a very different experience as she plays live in the
Kremlin – not that you get to see the gig. With the main concert footage
filmed at The Fairfield Halls Croyden earlier this year, the gorgeous Georgian-born
star displays why she’s become a mainstream sensation – and sex icon. She also
delights in her new found status and the opportunity to play live, also
admitting she’s not a Jazz performer per se : there are undeniable influences
here and there.
Her backing band, which we fleetingly meet, contains some very experienced
musicians, including ex – Womble and mentor, pianist Mike Batt who is never
too far away from his new found talent.
Melua doesn’t do impressions to well – her Bob Dylan take is quite tragic –
I suppose we’ll forgive her because she’s a little cutey. Basically, this DVD
is nothing more than a visual companion to the album – however, it’s good to
have the studio and live formats together. Most people won’t have seen or
heard her live – this shows how good she really is.
Funnily enough, she’s wearing the same stage gear that I saw her in at the
Royal Court Liverpool in February. Who says pop stars are extravagant beasts!
