Thirteen year old Chester schoolboy Inigo Byrne releases his debut album My World on Belerion Records.
The talent remains with the singing as he delves into the back-catalogue of
popular legends Lennon and McCartney, Queen, Stevie Wonder and Tears for Fears.
Classical composer Mozart also makes the cut, along with some nice renditions
of traditional songs. Not all the songs work because of the limp arrangements
such as Everybody Wants To Rule The World. Proverbial fodder like
Morning Has Broken gets the umpteenth cover.
Backing musicians Fairport Convention, the London Metropolitan Orchestra and
singers from the Tarvin Children’s Choir make excellent contributions.
Byrne scores high on track 14 – Ave Verum Corpus, but translates less
effectively into the secular sojourns of The Beatles’ Across The Universe.
Best track by a mile is Listen To The Voices.
As a debut it’s a very good effort, but he’s a long way to go. Problems will
arise when his voice breaks and the next step in his vocal development may not
take him into the highly competitive music world. One major drawback is the
lack of challenging material, though he excels on May It Be.
After a while, I found the whole listening experience rather dull. Good luck
to him, because he’ll need a hit like Aled Jones’ Walking In The Air to
get commercially recognised, and it isn’t here.
