If raucous vocals and riffs (some at lightning speed) are your thing, then Danko Jones is your baby. The Canadian trio of singer/guitarist Danko Jones,
new drummer Dan Cornelius and bassist JC put the pedal on the metal in a
furious attempt to conquer the world.
Despite their dedication to the cause,
there seems to be a problem – they’re nothing more than an average band that
don’t have much in the musical bag to set the world on fire. Great rock
bands, Led Zeppelin and the like, had more ‘musical ammunition’ at their
ready disposal, and subtlety to boot.
Danko Jones, are a limited band of
three musicians, not to say that trios don’t work, such as Free. JD can be
considered an old fashioned head - banging outfit that haven’t gone out of
their way to impress – or are unable to - unlike possible genre stable mates
AC/DC. Having always believed that that gratuitous (mindless) boogie has a
relatively short shelf-life, this album consolidates that belief.
Short on inventiveness, imagination and an understanding of dynamics
(memorable rock) that add to the listening experience, the band delivers a
high-octane assault of decibels that borders on the contrived and
pretentious.
Seeking a highlight is virtually impossible. In the modern rock world, this
sounds like old hat, and amateurish at that.
Their entire global gigging (mission) might just be in vein.
