Indie folk singer’s intimate musings – brilliant. In my eyes, or even ears, Bon Iver can do no wrong. His masterful album For Emma, Forever Ago hit all the right buttons with this reviewer. Now we get bonus tracks from those chilly recording in Wisconsin’s outback. Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) has just made the UK Top 40 singles chart at 37 nestling between Pink (So What) and Rihanna (Rehab). It’s a first for Jagjaguwar Records too. Hooray! The album, done in his dad’s shack with simple gear – guitar, piano and vocoder, was dressed-up later. The concept was to catch a solitary reflective time after a lost-love, amidst the snow and time for hunting. The results were remarkable, and so are these album ‘outtakes’.
By definition, the sparseness and presentation is captivating and stunningly beautiful especially the piano-led Babys. The ivory tinkling is both haunting and warm, while the ghostly vocals appear to dance. Woods is voice-tampered, again, catching a special reclusive time declaring, “ I’m building a still to slow down the time.” Iver’s best moment is just the man and guitar – Beach Baby –amazing, oh, and those pedal steel add-ons…that melt away the winter snow. Title track Blood Bank is the most up-beat here, though not the EP’s finest moments. The verdict: Perfection
