Mamma Mia!:
The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of multigenerational women singing "Dancing Queen" is one of the high points of Mamma Mia!, the musical built around the songs of the hugely popular pop group ABBA. The plot sets in motion when Sophie (A
manda Seyfried, Mean Girls), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her mother's diary, she suspects that one of them is her father.
When all three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips out and finds that passions she thought she'd laid aside are coming back to life. But let's face it, the plot is not the point--it's a ridiculous contrivance that provides an
excuse for the characters to sing the massive hits of ABBA. Regrettably, first-time film director Phyllida Lloyd (who directed the original stage production) has drawn over-the-top performances from everyone involved, even Streep; every production number
hammers its exuberance into your eyeballs. Which is too bad, because Mamma Mia! is a rarity: A middle-aged love story.
The kids start things off, but the story is really about Streep and the three guys (former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, former Mr. Darcy Colin Firth, and Swedish star Stellan Skarsgard), as well as Donna's best friends (Christine Baranski, best known from t
he TV show Cybill, and Julie Walters, Calendar Girls). It's a romantic comedy aimed at the people who were around when all these songs were new, and that's an age group Hollywood largely ignores. For that alone, Mamma Mia! deserves to find an audience.
What if mankind had to leave Earth, and somebody forgot to turn off the last robot? This is the premise behind Wall-E, the latest comedy adventure from the inventive storytellers and technical geniuses at Pixar Animation Studios (The Incredibles, Cars, Ra
tatouille). The story, told by Academy Award®-winning writer-director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo), concerns a determined robot named WALL-E, left behind to clean up the planet after the last humans have left.
After hundreds of lonely years of doing what he was built for, WALL-E (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) has developed his very own personality. He discovers a new purpose in life (besides collecting knick-knacks) when he encounters--and
becomes enamoured with--a sleek search robot named EVE. WALL-E and EVE travel across the galaxy and set into motion one of the most exciting and imaginative comedy adventures ever brought to the big screen. Joining WALL-E on his fantastic journey across
a universe of never-before-imagined visions of the future is a hilarious cast of characters, including a pet cockroach and a heroic team of malfunctioning misfit robots.
Filled with surprises, action, humour and heart, WALL-E also features original and innovative sound design by Academy Award®-winner Ben Burtt, the man responsible for the voice of R2D2 in Star Wars (as well as work on E.T. and Indiana Jones).
Ben Miller and Alexander Armstrong star in the hit BBC comedy sketch programme the armstrong and miller show.
The line-up of characters, includes Brabbins and Fyffe, the filthy alter-egos of Flanders and Swann; the Inappropriate Dentist, who regales his captive audience with tales of swinger parties and the state of his pet dog’s prostate; Tony and Dimitri, a hap
less football manager and his Russian oligarch boss; and wartime fighter pilots, talking in modern-day street lingo. Wince at the near-the-knuckle instructions of a politically incorrect sat nav, and marvel at the very existence of Pru and Miranda, two fa
t ladies with the difference that they can neither cook nor run Dandy Lion’s, their brain-meltingly inefficient vegetarian restaurant in Hampstead.
And that’s just a taster – there are nearly 100 other characters in the series, all with a hint of Armstrong and Miller’s exquisite nose for the absurd.
The Armstrong and Miller Show is out now on
DVD (£12.98).

Kung Fu Panda:
What's a panda to do when his dreams of kung-fu awesomeness awake to the cold reality of noodle-making? Clumsy, overweight Po (Jack Black) dreams of becoming a kung fu master like China's revered "furious five," but instead seems destined to follow in the
footsteps of his father and grandfather in the restaurant business. When great leader Oogway has a vision that the imprisoned kung fu warrior Tai Lung (Ian McShane) will soon escape, he declares it time to choose China's dragon warrior--one kung fu maste
r deemed worthy of possessing the dragon's scroll and its secret to limitless power.
Po and all the townspeople rush to the Jade Palace atop the highest mountain to witness the contest between Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Crane (David Cross) and Viper (Lucy Liu), but Po is locked outside the palace.
After a miracle of sorts, Po lands inside the palace gates, where he is chosen as the dragon warrior and placed under the tutelage of the decidedly non-plussed master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman). An unconventional student to say the least, hilarity reigns as
Shifu tries desperately to make Po into some semblance of a kung fu warrior.
Can Po possibly fulfill his destiny as dragon warrior, or was Oogway's final decision a critical mistake? A film rich with hilarious moments, superior animation, and an important message about believing in oneself and the power that comes from within, Kun
g Fu Panda is great entertainment that will have the whole family laughing and begging for more.
Kicking off with a jam-packed Christmas special and ending with a blockbuster extended closing instalment, Doctor Who's fourth series since it was revived is a breathless, exciting one, that also boasts some exceptional episodes.
You get fourteen episodes for your money here, and the ones in particular to watch out for are the outstanding Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead double header, the almost single-location creepfest that is Midnight, and the trio of Turn Left, The S
tolen Earth and Journey's End that round off the series. In the midst of those is also one of the very best cliffhangers that Doctor Who has ever employed in its long and glorious history.
This is also the series of Doctor Who that introduces Catherine Tate as full-time companion Donna Noble, working alongside David Tennant's Doctor across time and space. And it's--against initial expectations--arguably the best combination since the show r
eturned. Here, there's no hint of romance between the pair, as they instead knuckle down to business, occasionally helped by the likes of Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) and Jack Harkness (John Barrowman).
Let's not forget too the collection of monsters we meet this time round. The daleks and Davros are the main attractions in Doctor Who Series 4, while the return of the Sontarans proves to be a bit of a disappointment. But, after viewing the series, chance
s are you'll be counting shadows around you, and wary of getting on the wrong side of the Ood.
More sun, sangria and swinging in series two of Benidorm…
Once again the Solana, Benidorm’s premier all-inclusive resort, plays host to its usual mix of holidaymakers all looking for sun, sea and savings.
The Garveys return with a few new additions – Telle’s baby Coolio and Madge’s new boyfriend Mel Harvey (Disbury’s answer to Julio Iglesias). The Oracle gets romantic with Telle; enthusiastic swingers Donald and Jacqueline are, as ever, on hand with helpfu
l advice and Kate and Martin are happy in the knowledge that they are never, ever coming back to Benidorm…
With plenty of karaoke, bull-fighting and a spectacular mobility chair shoot-out, this second series of Benidorm is unmissable.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull:
Nearly 20 years after riding his last Crusade, Harrison Ford makes a welcome return as archaeologist/relic hunter Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, an action-packed fourth installment that's, in a nutshell, less memorabl
e than the first three but great nostalgia for fans of the series. Producer George Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (War of the Worlds) set the film during the cold war, as the Soviets--replacing Nazis as Indy's villains of choice and led by a sword-wie
lding Cate Blanchett with black bob and sunglasses--are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has mystical powers related to a city of gold.
After escaping from them in a spectacular opening action sequence, Indy is coerced to head to Peru at the behest of a young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) whose friend--and Indy's colleague--Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured for his knowledge of the s
kull's whereabouts. Whatever secrets the skull holds are tertiary; its reveal is the weakest part of the movie, as the CGI effects that inevitably accompany it feel jarring next to the boulder-rolling world of Indy audiences knew and loved.
There's plenty of comedy, delightful stunts--ants play a deadly role here--and the return of Raiders love interest Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, once shrill but now softened, giving her ex-love bemused glances and eye-rolls as he huffs his way to save
the day. Which brings us to Ford: bullwhip still in hand, he's a little creakier, a lot grayer, but still twice the action hero of anyone in film today. With all the anticipation and hype leading up to the film's release, perhaps no reunion is sweeter tha
n that of Ford with the role that fits him as snugly as that fedora hat. --Ellen A. Kim

The adventures of the Griffin family continue apace with this latest Family Guy boxset, which once again delivers many hours of quite brilliant animated comedy.
The show, for those new to it, follows the wonderful Griffin family, headed up by the daft but loveable Peter and the happily oblivious Lois, through to their teenage kids Chris and Meg. But as any seasoned Family Guy viewer will happily tell you, the gol
d of the show lies with the two characters who are the brains of the family. On the one hand there’s Brian the dog, and then on the other is the little baby Stewie. He, surely, is the absolute highlight, a maniacal evil genius of a child, who in this seas
on seven set finally manages to kill Lois. Insert your own evil laugh here.
The 12 episodes on offer in the Family Guy season 7 boxset aren’t all vintage, but there are some cracking inclusions. The 100th episode special is a good place to start, and then there’s the small matter of President Bush’s underwear going walkabout. Thr
ow in a bit of time travel for Peter, and it’s the usual oddball mix that helps make the show so strong.
PS. How is this called "Season 7" when it's actually Season 6?
The BAFTA award winning comedy, written by James Corden and Ruth Jones, makes a welcome return to DVD just in time for Christmas. After a triple success at last year’s British Comedy Awards and triumph at The South Bank Show Awards, the second series of G
avin & Stacey is released on 10th November.
Gavin is an ordinary boy from England, Stacey is an ordinary girl from Wales. After speaking on the phone to each other every day at work - they finally met, fell in love and got married.
Now in Series 2, the honeymoon's over for the newlyweds, and their married life begins in earnest at the Shipman family home in Essex. But, as the reality of living so far away sinks in, Stacey starts missing her home in Barry Island along with her mum an
d her Uncle Bryn.
Meanwhile, Gavin and Stacey's best friends, Smithy and Nessa, are coming to terms with their own stark reality: they're not even friends and yet they're having a baby together!
Screen favourites Rob Brydon and Alison Steadman join an outstanding cast in this contemporary comedy about young romance. Mathew Horne (Catherine Tate, Roman’s Empire, Teachers) and Joanna Page (Gideon’s Daughter, Love Actually) star as Gavin and Stacey,
Ruth Jones (Little Britain, Nighty Night) as the forthright and tattooed Nessa, and BAFTA award winner James Corden (Fat Friends, History Boys) as the blokes’ bloke Smithy. Julia Davis (Nighty Night) and Sheridan Smith (Love Soup, Two Pints Of Lager and
A Packet of Crisps) also make guest star appearances.
The DVD contains the entire second series plus a wealth of extras including 'An Insight into The Making of Story of Series 2' with an exclusive interview with Ruth and James, outtakes, James and Ruth on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross and audio commentari
es on selected episodes.
Gavin & Stacey Series 2 is out now on
