Newly redesigned PlayStation set for fifth anniversary release
Since its debut in December of 1994, PlayStation has achieved cumulative shipments of
73 million units by May 31, 2000 - making it the most popular game console in
the world. By inheriting the same functions and continuing the success of the current
console, "PS one" will lead the PlayStation format into the new mobile network
era.
In the future, a special adapter cable will be made available that enables the entire PlayStation
platform family (PlayStation, "PS one" and the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system) to be
connected to mobile phones - creating a massive new audience for network digital services, offering new
forms of entertainment beyond traditional packaged content. This cable is being launched first
in Japan this Winter. This will bring about a new era of networked entertainment. With
this mobile phone network connection, the user can download information, entertainment content and software
programs in addition to exchanging data with other users, in a variety of ways.
The design of "PS one" is the result of radical size-reduction of the original PlayStation to position it
for the mobile network era. While containing the same functions as the PlayStation game console, "PS one"
has been condensed to approximately 1/3rd its size, making it easy to carry it
anywhere. When connected to the specially designed "PS one" LCD monitor that is planned
to be available in the new year, it is possible to take the world of
PlayStation entertainment with; from room to room, house to house and out and about in a car (this requires appropriate AC Adapter).

Ray Maguire, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK, confirmed that
PS one will be launched on September 29, 2000 before the introduction of
PlayStation 2 and that it will support the existing PlayStation PAL software catalogue of nearly
900 existing titles and more than 200 additional titles due for release before the end
of this year.
"PlayStation continues to enjoy market dominance in the UK and has been described
as an icon of the Nineties. Now on this very significant date, we have decided to launch a new
version of PlayStation given a 21st Century makeover. This is an incredibly exciting time for
PlayStation - the new PS one model with extended portability and future mobile phone
connectivity will allow us to explore new opportunities for PlayStation in this network
era. PS one is a bold new addition to the PlayStation family. Meanwhile, PlayStation 2 will offer
a completely new computer entertainment system when it is released on November 24, 2000.
It is our intention to exploit the networking and portability opportunities presented through the adapter
cable and LCD screen in the UK. Although we are unable to comment on specific launch
dates at this time, we would like to confirm that these features will be incorporated over time in the PAL market."

Momentum have also announced 2 versions of RESERVOIR DOGS for the 20th of
November.
Released by Momentum Pictures Home Entertainment, the DVD incudes
a special introduction to the film by Tarantino himself. For the
collector the title will also be available in a limited edition gift set
including a paperback biography of the director called 'Tarantino -
The Man and His Movies' and an exclusive set of ten collector's
postcards specially produced for the DVD).
The standard DVD will retail for £19.99 (RRP) and the limited edition
box set for just £29.99 (RRP).
Reservoir Dogs was genuinely revolutionary for its time, and its violent
content still causes controversy both sides of the Atlantic. Certainly it
paved the way for future writers and directors and inspired a look and
feel which can still be seen influencing such films as 'Lock Stock and
Two Smoking Barrels', 'Snatch' and 'Love, Honour and Obey'.
Starring Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi, and Tim Roth
as Messrs White, Blonde, Pink et al, Reservoir Dogs is the tale of a
motley crew of thieves, brought together by a small-time mob boss to
carry out a diamond heist. The plan starts to fall apart when the cops
up within moments - so quickly in fact that it is clear the robbers
have a rat in their midst. One thing's for sure ... its going to be an
unpleasant fate for the perpetrator.
The DVD's introduction to the film, entitled A Directors Profile , offer
a personal insight into Tarantino's work, his thinking and his
idiosyncracies. It also picks up on his inspirations, the way he has
collected ideas and influences from an eclectic mix of his own
favourite movies; the way some of the characters and details weave
the plot of Pulp Fiction; and how by harking back to earlier movies,
and blending them with his own unique style, he created a cinematic
zeitgeist for the '90's.
Also announced is a special edition of Angel Heart for the 27th of
December as part of a collection called "The Directors Chair". Each disk in
the collectors chair collection will be accompanied by a full-colour book giving even more background on
the films and directors, including a collation of articles and reviews from the original
theatrical release and a foreward by the director. Here is what the PR has to say anout
the Angel Heart disk:
For Angel Heart, MPHE has teamed up with Alan Parker to record a
feature length director's commentary and film an exclusive interview,
as well as including on the DVD three 'Making Of' featurettes and
behind-the-scenes footage.
Alan Parker's commentary gives the feature a new dimension and
incredible insights as he talks through his influences, intentions and
thoughts behind this disturbing cinematic masterpiece which continues
to stand the test of time.
Sony finally lifted the lid on its European PlayStation 2 software launch
line up today, revealing that no fewer than 33 titles will be available for
the format across 17 countries across the continent on the November 24th
launch date.
The PS2 will be also be available in Australia and New Zealand on 30th
November 2000 and Poland, the Czech Republic, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iceland and
South Africa and some Mediterranean countries before Christmas.
63 titles will be available by the end of March 2001, which Sony claims is
the largest ever library at launch by any platform.
According to Sony SCEE president Chris Deering, the 500,000 units available
at launch will be more than three times more than the launch of the original
PlayStation in 1995.
Sony plan to have one million PS2 units available across Europe by the end
of December 2000 and three million by the end of March 2001.
Deering added: "Our software line up demonstrates just how far studios from
Europe, North America and Japan have been able to push the system in what
has been a relatively short development time. During the next few months
consumers will see even more show-case, ground-breaking PlayStation(r)2
titles, as developers build on their expertise, whilst striving to add
innovative new features, immersive gameplay elements and compelling
storylines to all future releases.
We are very pleased that the development and publishing community has given
such overwhelming support to the PAL markets. To have 90 titles in the space
of 4 months demonstrates the smooth transition that developers have made in
creating software titles and the enormous popularity that PlayStation(r)2
has engendered amongst the Industry as a whole.''

Who will be in Red Dwarf: The Movie...?
It appears that shooting has begun on the £40m movie, but in addition
to the regular cast, big-name cameos will include Madonna and
Jackie Chan.
Whether it can improve on the last few series will remain to be seen.
Factory Records: The Movie...
Yes, the Manchester record label, co-owned by Anthony H. Wilson and
New Order, also home to their music and that of Joy Division
and Happy Mondays, is to be made into a film.
Covering the period from 1976-92, Steve Coogan is tipped to play
Anthony H. Wilson, but no other names have been touted as of yet.
Wilson's club The Hacienda may now be closed after idiots with guns
getting in the way, but it was always overpriced anyway. Better to stick
with the Paradise Factory on Princess Street in Manchester, not
far from the gay village. Weekend nights may be designated gay nights, but
you'll find there's just as many straight people in there anyway.
I think the Friday nights are better anyway. Apart from being a lot cheaper
to get in, there's much better music to hear, whereas Saturdays are more for
hardcore dance tracks.
Jet Set Radio in trouble in Milwaukee...
Council passes resolution asking Sega to cancel graffiti game release
A video game in which digital kids on skates cruise through a fictional
city spraying graffiti on public buildings has city officials seeing red.
The Milwaukee Common Council wants Sega of America to cancel the U.S.
release of Jet Set Radio, saying the game promotes graffiti vandalism, a
problem the city has been combating since the early 1990s. The council
recently passed a resolution asking Sega to stop making the game.
"It lionizes taggers as these creative artists," said Alderwoman Suzanne
Breier.
"Milwaukee is the only city so far to complain about the game, scheduled for
release in the United States Oct. 31", Sega spokeswoman Gwendolyn Marker
said. "Basically, we have no plans to stop publishing Jet Set Radio,".
The game, already available in Japan, features characters armed with spray
paint who try to elude police and spray paint or "tag" as many public
buildings as possible without getting caught.
In the Japanese version, pop-up phrases offer a running commentary on the
game, including phrases such as "Get paint, do damage," "Nothing like
defacing a little public props" and "Look out! It's the MAN."
Marker said the game does not condone acts of vandalism. "It's a fantasy. It
celebrates graffiti as art," she said.
She said U.S. content standards are different and the phrases likely would
not appear in the latest version. She declined to elaborate, saying the game
was still in development.
"The game also contains a warning saying graffiti vandalism is a crime",
Marker said.
But that's not enough for Milwaukee officials.
The resolution the Milwaukee Common Council passed unanimously also
denounced the game, saying it makes defacing public property seem fun and
cool to young people.
Breier said she planned to ask other Wisconsin municipalities to draft
similar resolutions.
The city spends $1 million a year on graffiti prevention and cleanup and
anticipates an even bigger problem after Jet Set Radio is released,
according to the resolution the council passed.
"Milwaukee saw an explosion of graffiti in the early 1990s and began to
aggressively fight such vandalism, including passing an ordinance making it
illegal to sell spray paint or wide-tipped markers to minors. Milwaukee has
seen a steep decrease in the last four years in graffiti vandalism,"Police
Capt. William Fadrowski said.
October 16th sees the release of Cold Feet Series 2 and given the
criticism levelled at the first series' 2-disc set, because it was cropped
to 4:3 instead of being in 16:9 anamorphic widescreen, Granada's PR dept.
told me they'd pass my review onto their "senior people".
I so hope this means that both series will be released properly. After all,
if Granada can't get hold of their own widescreen masters then who else will?
Check out my
Cold Feet Series 1 review
to see why it's a problem.
October 23rd brings us The Very Best of Rising Damp (120 mins),

Paramount have announced "Saving Private Ryan" for the 6th of November
priced at £19.99. The disk will be 1.85:1 anamorphic, with a DD 5.1 soundtrack.
Extras are :
Return To Normandy Documentary
Into The Breach Documentary
Two Theatrical Trailers
This is going to be an interesting title when it comes out. The picture on the R1
disk gave US punters a lot of problems trying to understand the distinct
quality that the Spielberg had given it. Lets hope the UK disk matches that
quality !
U-571 from EiV in DTS? No
The R1 release of Sub Movie "U-571" will contain a DTS soundtrack, but as
this is an EiV title in the UK I thought I'd check just in case EiV would be
adding a DTS track to their release due in December. No such luck I'm afraid,
so it looks like DD 5.1 only for that release.
T2 UK delayed until 2001
The R2 release of "Terminator 2: Ultimate edition" has been put back until the
29th of January. I'm not surprised really, Momentum had a lot of work in
store to get that disk out on time !
The sixth Bond film and the one and only time George Lazenby appeared
as the suave hero, but with any of the suaveness (if there's such a word).
Blofeld pops up in the form of Telly Savalas.
Apparently Warner Brothers are reducing the price of around 150 catalogue
titles by around £2, at least to the trade. Among the titles at the new price
point are "The Iron Giant", "Contact", "Mars Attacks!" and the
"Batman" franchise.
Toy Story Boxset announced
Disney have announced "Toy Story 2" for the 6th of November priced at
22.99. The 25 minutes of extras will be :
Hilarious set of out takes
Making of 'Toy Story 2'
Woody's Round-Up music video
Exclusive behind the scenes with Tim Allen and Tom Hanks
'Luxo Junior' animated short story
Also released on the 6th of November will be "Toy Story" (priced at £22.99)
with the following extras:
Tin Toy' animated short story
The making of 'Toy Story' feature
Real collectors may want to wait for the 27th of November though for " Toy
Story' Collector's Edition" featuring 2 ½ hours of extras as well as "Toy
Story" and "Toy Story 2". The collectors edition will be priced at £49.99.
Disney rental DVDs
We also have confirmation of 3 Rental DVD titles from Disney:
Scream 3, October 30th
Mission to Mars November 13
The Cider House Rules October 30th
The fifth Bond film and Sean Connery's last... well, he said it would
be at the time but we all know what happened later on. In this film, Blofeld
shows his face for the first time as Donald Pleasance.
Look out tomorrow for a review of On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
It's one of my favourite TV shows in recent years with many a gripping and
heart-rendering moment. When I heard it was coming out on DVD I jumped for joy,
but read this review to find out why you shouldn't buy it, thus sending the
message home to Granada Media...
What do you think of the state of the charts? Why not discuss it on

added release info for another 341 titless which covers up until January

I've still got to plug all the technical info that goes in the second half
of the list, but won't get chance to complete that for a little while yet
as it'll take a long long time to do so please bear with me :)

Black & White, one of this Christmas' sure fire blockbusters has

certain to join the list of formats later next year.

Paula Yates cause of death 'inconclusive'...
The coroner who carried out a post-mortem on Paula Yates' body could
not determine the cause of death. An inquest into the case will open on
Wednesday.
Bob Geldof has been given temporary custody of the orphaned daughter,
Tiger Lily, aged 4, who has been confirmed as a ward of court by Mrs Justice
Hogg.
Tiger Lily won't be the only child in the world to grow up with parents who
have both committed suicide (allegedly), but on the plus side, Tiger won't go
short of dosh and can sell the story to Dominic Moron and all the other
tabloids. Picture the setting :
"The Sun's Bizarre Page: Sat, Sept 13th, 2014.
Dominic Moron interviews Tiger Lily at 18 and asks her how her life has gone
as we approach the 14th anniversary of her mother's death.
Dominic Moron: "Yeah, well, she's a lovely girl and it was me who thought up
the name 'Tasty Tiger', but I did get into a bit of strife when I referred to
her parents as 'Masochistic Michael' and 'Pill-popper Paula'"
After that tragic incidient - of Dominic Moron almost losing his job - he
maintained his apology that 14 years on he could still not lose his trademark
Chris de Burgh haircut."

COMPETITION WINNERS: Miami Vice on VHS...

of taking down. The 1980s belonged to Miami Vice.
But before Tubbs disappeared from public view and Crockett, aka Don Johnson,

Paula Yates dies at 40...
Troubled TV presenter and mother of four badly-named children Paula Yates
was found dead in her West London home yesterday. She was 40.
Police said she was found in bed by a female friend who visited the Notting
Hill property at around 10.15am and she was pronounced dead around an hour
later.
They added that they were treating the death as suspicious pending the
outcome of a post mortem but that there were no signs of violence.
A body was removed from the house at about 1.30pm along with several items.
Paula had tried to commit suicide a few times during her life so this hasn't
been ruled out yet. The coroner's verdict will be heard later today.
Ex-husband Bob Geldof said: "We are all so sad. The loss for all
the children is insupportable."
Her The Tube co-presenter Jools Holland did not say:
"Get down, you groovy fuckers!"

Poo-chi and Yoda news...
POO-CHI SOARS TO NO.2 IN THE TOY CHARTS
Poo-Chi, the loveable interactive puppy from Tiger has climbed its way to the no.2* position in
the toy charts after its launch in mid-June 2000. It has gone head to head with Pokémon and
outdoor play toys that are always popular in summer and snatched the number two slot.
Tim Garner, Tiger Electronics’ UK Managing Director comments: “There’s more than 4.5 million
households that own a dog that’s why we thought that Poo-Chi would be popular. I think his
success is due to his cute looks and personality and that he can communicate with his owners to
let them know how he is feeling.”
The more you care for Poo-Chi™ the happier he will be. Owners can determine the personality
of their Poo-Chi™ by the way it is treated. There is one of five pre-set characters to choose from.
He’ll let you know if he is happy, sad, hungry, angry or ready to have fun. Make him happy by
giving him attention and hear him sing one of six pre-programmed songs including the
Wedding March, Beethoven's 9th and Eine Kleine.
Poo-Chi™ responds to light, touch and sound and has a moving head, ears, legs, mouth and
can stand, sit or dance on his tiptoes! Watch him beg for his bone! Poo-Chi™ will interact with
other Poo-Chi™. They love to dance and sing together.
Poo-Chi™ will come with a bone and his own home that looks like a pet carrier. The hi-tech
'pup' comes in three different colours; purple, blue and pink. SRP: £24.99.
Tiger Electronics has teamed up with Yahoo! Auctions to launch an exclusive Interactive Yoda
that has been signed by Frank Oz, the original voice of Yoda. There is only one signed Yoda on
offer in the UK, it’s a real collector’s piece. Bids for the toy can be made at
http://auctions.yahoo.co.uk from 1 October 2000.
All monies raised by Yahoo! Will be donated to the NSPCC Full Stop Campaign, so parents and
Star Wars fans should think big when bidding for this one of a kind collectible.
Interactive Yoda is a replica of the infamous Jedi Master. Using the voice of Frank Oz, Yoda’s
vocabulary consists of more than 800 words and phrases that help teach budding Jedi Knights
the ways of the force in order to defeat the Darkside. Yoda comes complete with a special
'intelligent' lightsaber that aspiring Jedi use during training sessions with Yoda. There are four
levels of Jedi development to conquer - apprentice, Jedi, Jedi Knight and Jedi Master.
Yoda interacts through a series of sensors: one on each hand, a light sensor, an infrared
transmitter and receiver and a four way position sensor. Following the commands of Yoda,
students will receive physical as well as intellectual and lightsaber training. He can interact with
other Yoda's using infrared technology and requires nourishment and rest in order to rejuvenate
his energies to give training.
What on Earth? It's Vib Ribbon on Sony Playstation...
One of the weirdest games ever made since the last weirdest one, the graphics
and sound are nothing you'd expect and to top it all, you are a rabbit!
Vib Ribbon
is online and out on Sony Playstation now.
Big Brother - Craig wins...
As shown on Channel 4 last night, Craig won the £70,000 prize,
the money 'handed over' to him by evicted public schoolboy toff Nicholas.
All the other ex-contestants appeared alongside him in the final and no doubt
it'll be another ratings hit for them.
However, I have to question the voting. When the third place announcement
was made, Darren, no percentage scores were given and then the phone
lines were open AGAIN?!
Seriously these new votes can't be added into the same poll which would
completely screw up the previous votes cast for Darren could they?
Either way, towards the end Dippy Davina said there was just 2% in
the votes and then a few mins later, the scores were still 51% for Craig
and 49% for Anna.
Craig plans to give all the money to a female friend with Downs Syndrome for
a heart and lung transplant operation in the USA, although they're still
short of their £250,000 target.
British Internet Gaming League Tournament...
ICM and Battletop's British Internet Gaming League Tournament Honours Winners at the Millennium Dome
London, England, 11th September 2000 - ICM, Inc. (International Cyber Marketing) and
Battletop's British Internet Gaming League Tournament went off with a bang at the prestigious
Millennium Dome on Saturday 9th September.
The top four players from six out of the seven competitions automatically
received free plane tickets and hotel accommodation to fly to Korea to compete
in the World Cyber Game Challenge next month (courtesy of Samsung Digital).
The event is organised by ICM and Battletop; Asia's leading Internet rankings
service and will take place in Korea's largest theme park, Everland in Yongin
from October 7 to October 15, 2000.
The UK qualifying event, the British Internet Gaming League tournament (BIGL)
was the biggest online gaming event ever held in the UK and was sponsored by
England's top online gaming service, Barrysworld.com and Samsung Digital.
Trophies were handed out to the lucky BIGL competitors by glamour models
Jordan and Jo Guest. The tournament was hosted by
Aleks Krotoski, presenter of Channel 4's Bits computer games TV show.
The following is a blow-by-blow rundown of the top prizewinners from each of the seven categories/competitions held during the day at
the Millennium Dome. Reviews are by John Bye, courtesy of www.eurogamer.net:
FIFA 2000 - "The final of Battletop's FIFA 2000 soccer tournament at the Millennium Dome ended with Karma
Killer beating DomiGod 3:1 to walk away with the £1700 first prize. It had looked like a walkover until
half time, when DomiGod started to recover, and a spate of second half fouls left Karma Killer two
men down. In the end DomiGod managed to claw back one goal in injury time to keep at least some
of his dignity, but it wasn't enough."
Starcraft - "The grand final of the StarCraft competition ended with strategy veteran
Daishi coming through against Duellist. It was a close start. The two players
began the game within a stone's throw of each other. Daishi soon gained the
upper hand though, surrounding Duellist's base with marines and turrets and
ambushing his troops as they emerged. It was all over rather quickly, with
Daishi's troops moving in for the kill and Duellist having nothing left to respond
with. Both players will be flown to Korea to compete in the World Cyber
Games Challenge."
Age of Empires 2 - "The game was close throughout, with DevilZ.HigH getting the early initiative with a first strike before claiming the center of the map,
which became a battlefield strewn with corpses and burnt out buildings for the rest of the match. In the end it was HigH who came
through and took the victory from his clanmate DevilZ.Loko, taking home the £1400 first prize. Nice."
Unreal Tournament - "Played out on Deck16, Liberator picked up the first frag but his sniper rifle fetish didn't really work out, and Dougal had soon rocketed
his way back into the lead. By half time Dougal seemed to be in control, and pulled out a 5:1 lead at one point. Liberator came back
hard; picking up a couple of sniper shots followed by a shrapnel strike to make it 5:4. In the end it was Dougal who came through
though, picking up two late frags to take the lead out of Liberator's reach. A good game."
Quake 3 - One on One - "The Quake 3 duel competition came down to a hard fought three map match between Timber and Blokey, who had previously faced
off against each other at the UK's CPL-Europe qualifier earlier in the summer. In the end it was Timber who again emerged victorious,
winning on Q3Tourney2, losing out to Blokey's rail on Q3Tourney, and finally taking the win on Q3DM13."
Quake 3 - Clan to Clan - "Meanwhile Timber's friends in Clan 9 (comprised of team members Sujoy,
Xorgal, Doomer, Xenon and Blue) were taking on the new Swedish
"super-clan" the QuadArena AllStars. The All Stars were demolished in short
order on Clan 9's favourite map, Q3DM6, but the second match was much
closer, ending in contentious circumstances with Clan 9 just two frags ahead
on Q3DM7. www.xsreality.com have posted a more detailed report on the
matches for those of you who want to find out more..."
Quake 3 - Free For All - "Prozac came in first place in the Quake 3 - Free for All. Prozac is a member
of Sweden's QuadArena AllStars (the latter came in second in the Quake 3 -
Clan to Clan competition - see above). Prozac received a trophy but is not
eligible for inclusion in the World Cyber Game Challenge."
With the primary backing of Samsung Electronics, a world leader in the
marketing of a full range of state-of-the-art electronics products, the World
Cyber Game Challenge officially kicks off the establishment of an annual
"World Cyber Games". To live up to its name as a truly worldwide event and
the world's largest game competition, the number of participating countries,
scope of events, and amount of prize money will be expanded with each
passing year.
For players who make it into the finals of the World Cyber Game Challenge,
they will go on to compete in the World Cyber Games in 2001. A city to host
the games is yet to be determined, however, Japan, Korea and America are
the current contenders.
Battletop's tournament organisation and ranking service is dedicated to providing the online community with the latest information and
current rankings of global Internet gamers and game players. In addition, Battletop enables its members to play the most popular
multi-player Internet games in real time either with or against other members and provides objective rankings according to game scores
and level of competition.
Battletop aims to raise the profile of Internet games competition, bringing with it big-game tournaments, substantial prize money,
corporate sponsors, higher levels of competition and online, real-time rankings and standings.
Battletop's next qualifying event for the World Cyber Game Challenge is the is the American Internet Gaming League Tournament in
New York City's Times Square from 15-16th September 2000.
Playstation racing games are about to take a U-turn on September 28th, 2000, with the release of SCi's unique and highly original Mille Miglia game. Once described as "The most beautiful race in the world",
this classic 1000 mile race through the Italian countryside and city streets is being brought to Playstation in all it's
picturesque and revved-up glory and who better to advise the developers on the fine details of the race and the
cars than racing legend, Sir Stirling Moss.
In the over populated racing genre, Mille Miglia delivers a new angle,
with stunning scenery, addictive gameplay and an original concept, gamers have the opportunity to participate in
all the classic parts of this race, driving through forests, mountain
tracks and, of course, the major cities. SCi and Sir Stirling Moss have paid close
attention to all the details so that the game is as realistic as possible.
Players will also be able to drive over 18 classic racing cars from three different time frames: 1927 - 1930, 1931 - 1945 and 1946 - 1957 and will be able to drive some of the greatest cars ever made such as the Mercedes 300 SLR in which Moss set the
Mille Miglia race record in 1955, averaging 97.9 mph. He completed the race in 10 hours, 7 minutes, 48 seconds, a record which has never been broken.
Mille Miglia can be played as a fully featured points based championship with the user trying to win all the leagues and unlock all the hidden cars and tracks or, alternatively, it can be played as an arcade game with the sole intention of racing a car
on a track and beating the opposition in one off events. Also featured is a two-player mode, where drivers battle it out to win the race in a head to head situation. Each driver has his own particular strengths, habits and weaknesses, adding to the
overall realism of Mille Miglia. With 12 dynamic camera angles and uncannily accurate playbacks, the game perfectly captures the beauty and skill of its namesake.
Combining Sir Stirling Moss's intimate knowledge of motor sport and the Mille Miglia race in particular, the game is guaranteed to be a huge hit this summer. With a soundtrack by Primal Scream Mille Miglia will be released on the
Sony PlayStation on 28th September 2000. It will be, without a doubt, one of the most visually stunning and original racing games released this year.

Tartan are planning more DVD releases, but I've yet to receive a single one
of them and I'd quite like a copy of Hard Boiled and Dobermann !
"Of Freaks and Men" 30th October in Russian. Described in the PR thusly:
It's St. Petersburg at the turn of the century. Johann and his assistants specialize in taking erotic photographs depicting the floggings of bare-bottomed women. Handsome but secretive, he connives his way into the peaceful households of
two upper class Russian families, aided by his sinister accomplice, Ivan. Through his cunning, he aims to use the beautiful Lisa and a pair of Siamese twins to his own voyeuristic ends.
Of Freaks and Men is a haunting melodrama of hidden passions and sadomasochistic urges. A bizarre
erotic tale where manipulation, revenge and perversion rule amidst the bourgeois façade of charm and innocence.
Director Alexei Balabanov's latest visual essay in dark absurdism is closer to the wilder shores of Russian literature than to anything seen in recent memory on the Russian screen.
"Night of the Living Dead" The original 1969 version. Released November 20th.
"Donald Cammell's Wild Side" with Christopher Walken, Anne Heche and Joan Chen. Released 6th of November. This is the recut and reconstructed version which restores Donald Cammell's original artistic vision. The DVD will feature an on-set i
nterview with Donald Cammell and his previously unreleased short film "The Argument". The disk will also feature an interview with Anne Heche who talks frankly about the difficulties of playing a lesbian before she came out herself.
Also, Tartan have said that Herschell Gordon Lewis release "Blood feast" and "Color
me Blood Red" have been delayed until 2001. Also released in 2001 will be:
"Two Thousand Maniacs"
"The Gruesome Twosome"
"She-Devils On Wheels"
"The Wizard of Gore"
"Gore Gore Girls"
Chicken Run
Apparently the official PR for the R2 "Chicken Run" will be
arriving soon. The list of features for the R2 disk follows. The first
thing to note is that some of these are quite different from the US release but this
should make the UK disk better than the US release. Of course the disk will be
1.85:1 enhanced for widescreen TV's and will feature a DD 5.1 soundtrack. Here's the
feature:
Commentary track by Nick Park and Peter Lord. This is the same as the R1 release
and was in fact recorded here in London. By all accounts this is an excellent
commentary, very funny with Nick and Pete working very well together.
"Foul Play" making of documentary. This is different
from the US documentary and is tailored more for the UK market.
A 20 minute video interview with Nick Park and Peter Lord who talk about animation
techniques. Again I believe this is an R2 exclusive
Aardman Archive. This is a special section with a retrospective of Aardman's work
and includes clips of Nick's first film, "Morph" and of course
"Wallace and Grommet"
There will be an extensive DVD-ROM section which will include storyboards and a
"how to animate". This is said to be very interactive.
Teaser and Theatrical trailer and the "Chicken Impossible" trailer.
Cast and crew information and production notes.
Audio description track

"Very Annie Mary"M
"The Yards"
"House of Mirth"
"Hamlet" with Ethan Hawke, Kyle MacLachlan, Sam Shepard, Diane Venora, and Bill Murray

Of course no dates are known and indeed many of these haven't even made it to the cinema yet.
Are the BBFC prepared to back down?
The new guidelines for the BBFC are now available at:
The Board now feel that the public want to be allowed more freedom in what they watch if a film is an 18.
However the board will still intervene when a a film promotes violent or dangerous activities. This will of course include the
instructive use of drugs.
At the lower end of the spectrum the board will intervene a lot more and will be more
restrictive on the U, 12 and PG certificates. However the 15 certificate may
well allow more sex, especially when portrayed in a loving or developing relationship.
Gone is the list of "banned" swear words
The Board is still trying to make up it's mind as to whether the 12 certificate is mandatory or advisory.
Kevin and Perry - the DVD Special Edition
Rumours are abound that the release of Kevin and Perry from Warner on
20th November will be another in their recent series of "Box Sets". No details
are known but if it's anything like the "Clockwork Orange" set then the DVD
could be packaged with a soundtrack CD or a script book.
The Doors gets an extension
Over in the States "Artisan" are planning on releasing a very special edition
of Oliver Stone's 1991 "The Doors". Some of the extras planned for the

"The Road of Excess" documentary includes behind-the-scenes footage, original concert footage, interviews with Val Kilmer, Frank Whaley, Meg Ryan, Kyle MacLachlan, Kevin Dillon, Kathleen Quinlan, Oliver Stone, Robby Krieger, and
Patricia Kennealy-Morrison.
Well good news, this one is another title included in the "Kinowelt/Momentum" deal announced recently. Momentum
can't confirm details on any of their releases yet but would say that his is one of their titles and they have
a policy of matching, if not exceeding other versions features. When the disk does appear I'm sure we won't be disappointed !

2 Point 4 Children actor Gary Olsen has died...
Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere other than on teletext...
Gary Olsen, who starred as the father in that sitcom and also appeared
in Channel 4's excellent Prospects and the comedy Up N Under
has died aged 42. It's believed he was suffering from cancer.
He died in Australia and his career ranged across films, theatre and TV, with
more than 30 productions to his credit.
He most recently starring in the British gangster movie, 24 Hours in
London, released in July (never heard of it myself).

Charlton Heston finds the Planet of the Apes on DVD...
DVDfever reviewer Mark Bubien is back again this week with the first
in what became a five-strong series of films which I've not seen myself, but
I may remember the musical version starring Troy McClure from The Simpsons.
Twice as long as the VHS release, this DVD contains all the promos from
both Performance and Cocktails and Word Gets Around as well
as a picture gallery and behind-the-scenes footage on many of the songs on
display.

Big Brother - Melanie's out...!
Last night, cold-hearted two-timing bitch Melanie was voted out of the house
with a massive 69%.
That leaves Darren, Anna and Craig in there for the final week.
I predict Darren will come third, and so interviewed in the studio when ejected
in the first of two hour-long shows next Friday at 8.30pm, whilst Craig
will win over Anna in the second show at 10.30pm.

Big Brother - three up for the chop this week...
As stated yesterday, my nomination predictions for this week were :
Anna: Craig and Darren
Craig: Darren and Anna
Darren: Craig and Mel
Mel: Craig and Darren
The nominations went :
Anna: Craig and Darren
Craig: Darren and MEL
Darren: ANNA and Mel
Mel: Craig and Darren
So, a change for Craig's and Darren's voting there that I didn't expect,
meaning that Darren (3 votes), Mel and Craig (2 votes each) are up for
eviction this Friday, with Anna getting just one vote.
It'll be a close-run battle between Darren and Mel this week, with
Craig still set to win the final on Friday 15th September.

November 20th :
WALLACE & GROMIT :
This DVD consists of a straight lay of the following films:
A Grand Day Out: Wallace likes a nice bit of cheese with his crackers,
so when this eccentric inventor finds his fridge empty and the local
cornershop shut for the Bank Holiday, he is forced to look further afield for
his cheddar. His faithful dog Gromit is used to his master's flights of fancy
but this time his ears prick up with excitement because our two plasticine
heroes are about to blast off in their home-made rocket on the ultimate day
trip - Wallace and Gromit are off to the moon!
The Wrong Trousers: This time it's action and laughter all the way as
our plasticine stars are plunged into a hilarious tale of skullduggery
involving an extraordinary pair of automated trousers and a villainous penguin.
Posing as an innocent lodger, the friendish fish-easter sets about recruiting
mild mannered Wallace as an unwitting accomplice to his dastardly plot - a
diamond heist with a technically advanced, trouser-inspired difference. It is
left to the faithful Gromit to turn detective and save the day as malice and
mayhem culminate in a breathless train-top chase - around the sitting room!
A Close Shave: Trade is booming for Wallace and Gromit's Wash'n'Go
window cleaning service and love is in the air as Wallace falls for the owner
of the local wool shop, the lovely Wendolene Ramsbotom. But Wallace has a new
incentive - a Kinit-O-Matic machine - and adventure looms: sheep are being
rustled, wool is in short supply and Wendolene's malevolent pooch is on the
prowl...
Price: £19.99.
Made in London and disbanded there too...
Made in London, another female trio created from a model, a backing singer
and a girl from Jamaica made No.15 with their first hit Dirty Water
in May this year. Yesterday their second single, Shut Your Mouth,
reached the dizzy heights of No.74.
Today they were dumped by their record company.
Made in London RIP.
Big Brother - who will go this week...?
For some reason I've never got round to discussing the TV show I've watched
the most of the past few weeks. Still, down to four people left it makes it
easy to predict this week's nominations.
As ever, although the housemates will have made their nominations yesterday,
their diary room chats are not broadcast on the internet and only when the
names are read out mid-afternoon today will we know, other than the usual
10pm TV show tonight.
My predictions for the final week of nominations are :
Anna: Craig and Darren
Craig: Darren and Anna
Darren: Craig and Mel (to compensate for last week's cockup)
Mel: Craig and Darren
Hence, Craig and Darren will be up for public eviction this Friday with
three votes each.
I had a vision. I predict that Darren will be booted out with a clear margin.
Cold Feet - the Cold Shoulder...
As I stated last week, Granada Media are going ahead with 4:3-cropped
international versions instead of nice crisp anamorphic 16:9 widescreen
masters that were used on TV when both series were shown.
Thanks to James Answer who emailed me yesterday stating :
"Very disappointed with this. I was going to buy them, but if they come out
in 4:3 I won't."
And he won't be the last one either. I hope Granada Media are listening to
this.
Email me at
ColdFeet@dvdfever.co.uk
with your thoughts on the matter and I'll pass them onto Granada Media in a
hopeful bid to make them change their minds as these series really do deserve
the widescreen treatment.
One of the biggest hits of 1997, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones
are the biggest secret that the government are keeping from us. The film
is now available in two special editions with a fiver's difference between them.
The review points out the differences between them both. So far I have only
received the first disc of the 2-disc set, but as soon as I have the second
I shall announce the update online.

COMPETITION TIME: Win Miami Vice on VHS...
The 1980s belonged to cool music, cool cars, cool cops and scumbags in need
of taking down. The 1980s belonged to Miami Vice.
But before Tubbs disappeared from public view and Crockett, aka Don Johnson,
brought us Nash Bridges and a couple of albums (Hey! I have the
Heartbeat album and it rules!), there was the Miami Vice TV
series.
Click on the picture on the right to enter the competition and check out
the official press release below.
THE HEAT IS STILL ON WITH MIAMI VICE NOW ON VIDEO
Under the hot pink neon lights where guns and tough street action meet with
glamour and fast cars, 'Miami Vice' captured a look and a lifestyle that was
emulated across the globe but that could only belong to the 80's.
Whether you were an eighties guy or girl, the chances are that you wanted a
piece of perma-tanned Don Johnson and his Ferrari Daytona Spider.
(DVDfever Ed: I thought it was a Ferrari Testarossa?)
And now you can have it as the world of 'Miami Vice' becomes available to
buy on two sizzling videos from 4th September.
In what was undoubtedly the definitive 80's cop show, Don Johnson starred as
tough but cool Detective Sonny Crockett with his vice squad sidekick, the
bold and bad Detective Ricardo Tubbs and, of course, his pet crocodile
Elvis.
Riding high on a Miami wave of 80's nostalgia, Volume 1 introduces viewers
to the world of the vice squad in the original feature-length two-hour pilot
show where the two cops first meet in difficult circumstances on the trail
of a Colombian drug baron.
Volume 2 contains two classic first series episodes, 'No Exit' and 'Give A
Little, Take A Little'. Produced by Starsky & Hutch's David Soul, 'No Exit'
sees Fed agents join Crockett and Tubbs to stop an arms dealer (played by
Bruce Willis complete with hair and baggy white 80's trousers) from selling
stingers.
In 'Give A Little, Take A Little' Crockett goes downhill as he gets jailed
for refusing to name an informant tied to a crime boss.
So what are you waiting for... book a course of 10 at your local Costa Del
Solarium, dust-off the lilac suit, rev-up the motor and head off to Petworld
for something less tame than a terrapin. Miami Vice is back and the heat is
most definitely still on...
Both videos released today by Playback,
RRP £9.99 each, Certificate 15.
Would you nominate the Big Brother theme to be the new No.1...?
As predicted in CTW (August 25th) French publisher Ubi Soft is one step
nearer to its goal of becoming one of the world's top five publishers,
having now acquired Red Storm Entertainment.
Following completion of the deal, Red Storm will become a wholly owned
subsidiary of Ubi Soft Entertainment and a Ubi Soft brand, and it is thought
that Red Storm will continue to be operated as an independent company.
Most of the Red Storm staff will remain intact in North Carolina, however,
the publisher/developer's UK office will join Ubi Soft in its Wimbledon
offices. All sales and distribution will be accomplished through a combined
team which will be known as the Ubi Soft sales force.
"The games published by Red Storm will complement Ubi Soft's product range
and this acquisition will allow the group to reinforce its existing
expertise in multiplayer action and strategy games," stated Yves Guillemot,
president and CEO of Ubi Soft.
Doug Littlejohns, president and CEO of Red Storm, added: "This merger is
good for Red Storm as consolidation is a natural and necessary phenomenon in
any fast growing field. While Red Storm has been remarkably successful
throughout its short life, the acquisition by Ubi Soft, a major player in
the industry, will ensure that together we are capable of leaping to the
next level of growth and profitability."
Wimbledon-based publisher Eidos reported its first quarter results,
with both sales and pre tax losses unchanged compared to the same time last
year.
For the three months to June 30 2000, turnover reached 16.8 million,
identical to the same point last year, while losses before tax and goodwill
for the same period were also the same as last year at 18.4 million.
Just four titles were released in the quarter; Walt Disney's Magical Racing
Tour, Daikatana, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, and Deus Ex. The
latter two performed particularly well, and Eidos is confident that forthcoming
quarters will be very strong, with potential blockbusters such as Who wants
to be a Millionaire?, Powerstone 2, Championship Manager 00/01 and
Tomb Raider: Chronicles on the schedule.
CEO Charles Cornwall said that the results reflected a relatively quiet
period for Eidos, and the continuing low level of activity in the retail
market: "The industry continues to experience an overall slowdown in
anticipation of the release of PlayStation 2."
He added: "With our balanced portfolio of established franchises, licensed
products and exciting and original new titles, we remain confident that
Eidos can trade through the current market difficulties and take advantage
of the next generation platforms as they gain market acceptance."
Meanwhile, industry sources suggested this week that Eidos could be acquired
by Infogrames in time for ECTS.
The X-Box machine is continuing to gather steam, with Microsoft today
announcing a massive 16 first party partners for the new format, including a
major coup in the shape of its first major partner, Lionhead Studios.
Lionhead's involvement is a statement of intent from Microsoft, signalling
just how serious the company is about X-Box. Peter Molyneux's Lionhead
Studios will be releasing two as yet unnamed groundbreaking products for
the new format.
Other high profile signings include UK-based Climax Development, which has
been responsible for such titles as Diablo and Populous:
The Beginning for the PlayStation. Another coup for Microsoft is Universal
Interactive Studios, which is probably best known for producing the massive
selling Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon for the PlayStation.
It seems like the X-Box will be well served with quality sports titles, with
the signing of Stormfront Studios (Andretti Racing/NASCAR series) and Kodiak
Interactive Software Studios (WCW Mayhem). Meanwhile, Totally Games, which
has previously developed four award winning Star Wars space combat
simulations, Pseudo Interactive Inc, which is led by former designer at
Original Systems, David Wu, and Boss Game Studios (Top Gear Rally/Boss
Rally) have all been signed up.
The remaining company's to join the team are Rainbow Studios (Motocross
Madness), Artificial Mind and Movement (Jersey Devil), Digital Illusions
(Rallymasters), High Voltage Software (Lego Racers), Know Wonder Digital
Media Works (Hot Wheels), Pipeworks Software (Tribes), Tremor Entertainment
(Railroad Tycoon 2) and VR-1 Entertainment (Fighter Ace).
"By providing the industry's best game developers with X-Box's future
generation technology and familiar tools today, Microsoft is ensuring
intense, action-packed X-Box experiences for gamers at launch," commented Ed
Fries, vice president of games publishing at Microsoft.

They've created a mobster: Mickey Blue Eyes on DVD...
Hugh Grant stars in a comedy which I thought would suck big time when
I first heard about it, but it turns out to be a real treat, co-starring
Jeanne Tripplehorn and James Caan sending up his role in
Coppola's The Godfather.
It's very good, but not quite American Perfekt on DVD...
It's hard enough to find an interesting road movie at the best of times,
but this one has decent plot twists too and is one of the few featureless,
fullscreen DVDs worth recommending and it stars Robert Forster, Fairuza
Balk, Amanda Plummer and David Thewlis.
Got something to say about this film/DVD ? Spit it out on the
Talk Talk Forum
forum.
Cold Feet - the news is bad...
No, the releases are still going ahead as far as I know, but rather than
releasing the anamorphic 16:9 widescreen masters that were used on TV when
both series were shown...
...Granada Media are apparently having to go with 4:3-cropped international
versions.
Email me at
ColdFeet@dvdfever.co.uk
with your thoughts on the matter and I'll pass them onto Granada Media in a
hopeful bid to make them change their minds as these series really do deserve
the widescreen treatment.
