news page pic Updated cinema listings...

Stuck for something to do this weekend? The list of the films showing at Manchester Showcase Cinema can be found on this page, and won't differ much from what's on in the rest of the country.

The new films released this week include: The Interpreter and The Amityville Horror (2005).

DVD highlights out next week...

A few highlights coming up that are well worth splashing out your moolah on. For each one that's of interest, click on the image for more info on Amazon:

First up is the other two films in the 'Dollars' Trilogy. Already out since April 2004 is The Good, The Bad & The Ugly Special Edition (£19.99), but next Monday sees the release of A Fistful of Dollars, A Few Dollars More and the other hand-clenched-related title, A Fistful of Dynamite. Click on the links below for more info.

Hustle Season 1 (£29.99, Warner) follows the fortunes of a gang of five expert con-artists let loose on the streets of London. They are specialists in the ways of the 'grifter' and all are keen to liberate cash from the amoral and undeserving.

From faking film sets and expensive paintings to double-crossing the duplicitous head of a bank's security system, the con is on! Season 2 is currently broadcasting on BBC1, Tuesday evenings at 9pm.

Extras on this boxset include "Assembling the team" featurette, Interviews with the writer, Interviews with the cast and producer and a Hidden Easter egg.

Mean Streets Special Edition (£17.99, Universal), Scorsese's groundbreaking movie, with its sharp dialogue and bristling energy, brought together the incredible talents of Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese for the first time and launched Harvey Keitel's brilliant career.

A small time hood's feelings of responsibility for his girlfriend's foolhardy cousin leads him to intervene in a dangerous quarrel over debts.

Extras include Commentary from Martin Scorsese, Original theatrical trailer, and a 'Back on the Black' original featurette.

Also out next Monday from Universal is Preston Sturges' Sullivan's Travels (£19.99). Hollywood director John Sulliavn (Joel McCrea), tired of churning out lightweight comedies, decides to make O Brother Where Art Thou - a serious, socially responsible film about human suffering. After his producers point out he knows nothing of hardship, he hits the road as a tramp. A bona fide classic from legendary writer/director Preston Sturges.

news page pic The Beatles Commemorative Plaque Project in Wales...

DVDfever.co.uk reviewer Elly Roberts is undertaking a project which he hopes will result in the siting of a plaque to register the fact that The Beatles played a concert in Mold, Flintshire north Wales. This was roughly 12 months before they became a world phenomenon. He continues...

Beatles authors and historians Ray O'Brien (Liverpool), Harry Thomas (Prestatyn) and I, are proposing that a commemorative plaque be placed on the Lloyds/TSB Bank (formerly the Assembly Hall) in Mold, to regitser that they played there on Thursday 24 January 1963.

The group had just had chart success with their first single Love Me Do, and Mold Town Council booked and paid their £50 fee.The after, Brian Epstein signed a contract with Vee Jay Records, who were going to handle their US singles releases.

On Sunday 3rd April, at Central Station venue in Wrexham, I met with Mike Peters of The Alarm (see review), to discuss his letter of support for the project. Mike is a massive Beatles fan, so he is more than pleased to help this project. Other letters or quotes have been kindly submitted by David Hanson MP for Delyn (Mold), Sandy Mewies AM for same area, Ian Lucas MP (Wrexham), plaque designer Tony Booth, Tourism Partnership North Wales, the above authors and eye-witnesses.

I hope to convince the relevant authorities, in particular the Conservation Dept at Flintshire County Council, and the building's landlord W.Black in Surrey, of its popular cultural significance and worthiness.

I am also discussing the possibility of sponsorship with various parties. The (bi-lingual) plaque siting could be included in information packs used at the annual Beatles Convention/Concerts in Liverpool.

I have contacted the Welsh Tourist Board about the possibility of having the Mold venue included in a brochure, which if successful, would include other venues The Beatles played at in Prestatyn, Rhyl, Llandudno ,Abergavenny and Cardiff.

Eventually I would like to take the project throughout Wales, placing plaques on all the venues.

There could be potential commercial spin-offs for all towns/cities etc. Press, television and radio could be invited to participate.

I would like people who attended the shows in ABERGAVENNY on SATURDAY 22 June 1963 (Ballroom,Town Hall, Cross St.) and their three shows in Cardiff on, MONDAY 27 MAY 1963 (Capitol Cinema), SATURDAY 7 NOVEMBER 1964 (Odeon Cinema) and SUNDAY 12 DECEMBER 1965 (Capitol Cinema) to come forward to retell their experiences of the nights, possibly supplying artefacts/memorobilia, such as tickets, programmes, photographs and autographs.

So far, I've had an overwhelming response from people who attended the show in Mold.

If any members of the press, radio or television were present at any of the above shows, I would like to hear from them too.

I am prepared to hold telephone interviews, or receive emails of their accounts. I can be contacted on 07765 862017 or email elly2000@freenet.co.uk

news page pic RED DOT: The campaign has a success...

Following on from the article below, published last Monday, has anyone yet had this kick in on their digibox? I have a silver Panasonic Sky box and it hasn't yet downloaded the software update.

The article was as follows:

"And I put this down to every single person who's ever campaigned against this 'press red' nonsense, since from today, Sky digital boxes will have software downloaded to them over the next few days to make the red-dot interactive logo disappear after 30 seconds of changing channel.

After that point, the 'press red-then-backup' to remove it completely until you change channel will hopefully still be possible.

And all this time, you can still press red to access the content, which means that the constant presence of the logo does not need to be in place.

Let's hope this is the first step to all logos being made an option, so those of us who aren't thick enough to not know what channel we're watching can switch off this irritation for good!"

Keep emailing the broadcasters tell them how you feel!

The RED DOT campaign is online now.

DVD highlights next week...

A few highlights coming up next week that are well worth splashing out your moolah on. For each one that's of interest, click on the image for more info on Amazon:

One of my favourite bands in the '80s, particularly around the middle of the decade, was Level 42, and I particularly enjoyed this title when it came out on VHS at the time, but now you can buy the DVD of Level 42: Live at Wembley (£10.99, Universal), which is unmissable at that price.

The tracklist is as follows: Thunderbirds, Fashion Fever, World Machine, Children Say, Love Games, Leaving Me Now, The Chant Has Begun, Lessons In Love, The Sun Goes Down, Something About You, Hot Water, Running In The Family., with DVD extras including the promo video for The Sun Goes Down and a 2005 Mark King interview.

An acclaimed director, an acclaimed actor, and a long-awaited director's cut are released next Monday.

Ken Loach's Carla's Song (£19.99, Universal) tells the story of the relationship between George, a free spirited Scottish bus driver and Carla, a refugee from Nicaragua who is adrift in Glasgow. The year is 1987 and in Carla's home country the Contra rebels are mounting their final, lethal assault against the Sandinista Government.

A love story that begins on a Glasgow bus and ends in Nicaragua amid the gunfire and explosions of war.

Another film set in 1987, but with rather more action, is the first in this double-bill which is released in a 4-disc Predator 1 & 2 Boxset (£32.99, Fox) containing the special editions of both movies, the original plus the underrated sequel, both with a blistering DTS 5.1 soundtrack and the following extras:

Predator: Audio commentary with director John McTiernan, text commentary with film historian, DVD Rom Game (Alien Vs Predator), documentary 'If It Bleeds, We Can Kill It', inside The Predator, 7 featurettes, Outtakes, Deleted scene, Special effects segments, Predator camouflage tests, Photo gallery, Predator profile.

Predator 2: Commentary by director Stephen Hopkins, Commentary by writers Jim Thomas and John Thomas, Three 'Evolutions' Segments, Six 'Weapons Of Choice' Clips, Four featurettes, Two Extended 'Hard Core' Special Reports, Stills gallery.

Also, take a look at the review for the time when beast meet beast in Alien Vs Predator: Special Edition, which is also out now on DVD.

Following the brilliantly successful SG1, the Stargate Atlantis series is now in full flow and the DVD releases are coming thick and fast.

Starring Joe Flanigan, Torri Higginson, Rachel Luttrell & David Hewlett, Stargate Atlantis Season 1 Vol.2 (£19.99, MGM) is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and contains the episodes Suspicion, Childhood’s End, Poisoning The Well, Underground, with extras including Atlantis Mission Directive: The Defiant One, Diary of Rainbow Sun Francks, Photo and production galleries and trailers.

Also out next Monday are the following other MGM titles:

The final entry in next week's highlights is a popular HBO series that's already completed three seasons in the US, so we have some catching up to do, but where better than to start with a 5-disc boxset containing the entire The Wire Season 1 (£49.99, Warner)

This unvarnished, highly realistic HBO series follows a single sprawling drug and murder investigation in Baltimore. Told from the point of view of both the police and their targets, the series captures a universe of subterfuge and surveillance, where easy distinctions between good and evil, and crime and punishment, are challenged at every turn.

Episode titles: The Target, The Detail, The Buys, Old Cases, The Pager, The Wire, One Arrest, Lessons, Game Day, The Cost, The Hunt, Cleaning Up, Sentencing.

Is there a 'hitch' with this soundtrack CD...?

news page pic Manchester City Council vs the Comedy Store...

Just a quick note to give a big thankyou to Manchester City Council for changing the single yellow lines outside the Comedy Store to double ones, such that those who park there, after having done so without a problem after 6pm, now get a parking ticket.

Why the need for double yellows? It's not as if there's any significant traffic after that time.

Feel free to join in on emailing them on city.council@manchester.gov.uk and tell them what a bunch of robbing bastards they are!

Six Feet Under Season 3 (£49.99, Warner) is the first one up, and was the first series to be shot in 16:9. The directors of previous seasons made a fantastic job of framing the 4:3 image perfectly, and there's no stopping the perfect cinematography featured here too. If only Warner could be a bit more speedy with the releases as Season 4 has long since been shown on E4 and Channel 4.

This ground-breaking series from Alan Ball, the Academy-award winning writer of American Beauty, takes a darkly comic look at life and death from the perspective of a dysfunctional family that runs an independent funeral home in California. This release features all the epsidoes from Season Three.

Episode titles: Perfect Circles, You Never Know, The Eye Inside, Nobody Sleeps, The Trap, Making Love Work, Timing and Space, Tears Bones and Desire, The Opening, Everyone Leaves, Death Works Overtime, Twilight, I'm Sorry I'm Lost.

One of my favourite 'slightly scary' films when I was young was the classic Roger Moore flick, The Man Who Haunted Himself (£15.99, VCI), as good goes against evil, despite them being the same person... or are they? Probably.

After a near fatal car crash Arthur Pelham, is horrified to discover an exact double of him has taken over his former life. The evil doppleganger steals his wife, his house, his job and sends him to the brink of madness while he tries to understand the weird forces now shaping his existence. What can the rational explanation be for all of this? Can Pelham learn the terrifying truth before losing his mind completely?

Extras include an audio commentary by Roger Moore and uncredited writer/producer Bryan Forbes, moderated by journalist Jonathan Sothcott, stills gallery, storyboard gallery, trailer, publicity materials and collectable original publicity booklet.

Apollo 13 Special Edition (£19.99, Universal), out next week, is a fantastic movie about the expedition that didn't go to plan, starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton. For more info, read the original DVD review.

The extras this time include an audio commentary with director Ron Howard, plus one with Jim & Marilyn Lovell, featurettes: "The Lost Moon: The Triumph of Apollo 13", "Conquering Space: The Moon and Beyond", "Lucky 13: The Astronauts' Story", so the only difference seems to be the addition of those featurettes as the commentaries were present on the original DVD.

Returning for one last bit of release info for this week is a set of titles from Silver Vision, which are many an hour of fighting. Click on the individual title for more info:

news page pic RED DOT: The campaign has a success...
