Changeling:

Clint Eastwood’s mastery as a director, established over the past decade and a half with Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby, Letters from Iwo Jima, and others, continues with Changeling, a 2008 offering based on a shocking but all-too-true story about child abduction and police corruption in 1920s Los Angeles. Single mother Christine Collins (Angelina Jolie, excellent in a role with somewhat limited parameters) finds her 9-year-old son, Walter, missing when she returns home from work one day.

She files a report with the Los Angeles Police Department, an outfit that was wildly unpopular at the time (in his regular radio broadcast, a crusading pastor played by John Malkovich decries the force as "violent and corrupt," adding that "our protectors are our brutalisers"). When a child roughly matching Walter’s description turns up in Illinois five months later, the LAPD, intent on salvaging its tattered reputation, is only too eager to claim that he is Collins’ missing child. Little matters that he’ s three inches shorter, is circumcised (Walter wasn’t), and fails to pass muster with Walter’s dentist, schoolteacher, and others; the cops, in particular the odious Captain J.J. Jones (Jeffrey Donovan), insist that the mistake is Christine’s, not theirs.

What follows is almost too nightmarish to believe--except that it actually happened. Exasperated by Collins’ continued claim that "Walter" is a fraud, they trot out a doctor to reinforce the bogus ID, declare her unfit as a mother, and finally have her co mmitted to a local psychopathic ward. Through it all, Collins, bolstered by the pastor and thousands of outraged Angelenos, refuses to sign a document that would exonerate the police for their egregious error. As for Walter, it’s only when the LAPD’s seem ingly only honest detective (Michael Kelly) takes matters into his own hands that the grisly mystery of the child’s fate begins to be solved.

Changeling is out now on DVD (£11.98) and Blu-ray (£15.88).

Dexter Season 2.

Dark and sinister is the new sexy, thanks to Dexter, which in its second season has proven to be the most successful series Showtime has offered up yet. Remember how much you squirmed in your seat during the season one finale? Believe it or not, the premi ere of season two felt like it could have been a season finale--because jaws were on the floor when the credits rolled. For being a supposed sociopath, Dex is pretty broken up about the gruesome events that concluded last season.

The one and only person who could possibly understand him is six feet under, and it seems our unlikely hero is losing his homicidal grip. He’s even having a little trouble slicing up a few of his latest victims (from a murderous gang member to a chainsaw- wielding fiend from his past). Enter Lila (Jaime Murray, Hustle), a lady with a sweet British accent and a few dark secrets of her own. She seems to accept Dex for who he really is, and he finds himself feeling relaxed for the first time in his life. In c ontrast, his relationship with his girlfriend Rita (Julie Benz) has been stretched almost to a breaking point. The problem is, he should be anything but relaxed.

Someone picked a poor place to go scuba diving off the Florida coast, and came across an underwater graveyard: Dex’s primo spot for dropping dismembered bodies wrapped in heavy-duty trash bags. Word about the "Bay Harbor Butcher" gets out quick, and the F .B.I. sends the best of the best, Special Agent Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine, Deadwood) to work alongside the police to sniff out Miami’s latest serial killer. This guy is no schlub, and Dex may have met his match. And, yes, Dexter gets to work with Lundy on a daily basis, which provides some wonderfully awkward moments. It certainly doesn’t help that the intuitively paranoid Sergeant Doakes (Erik King, Oz) is hot on Dex’s trail.

Season two of Dexter is all about decisions. Lila or Rita? Old code or new code? Run or fight? Right or wrong? Well, one thing’s for sure: When it comes to writing, casting, acting, and production, the makers of this show made all the right decisions. Mic hael C. Hall is simply superb as the title character. You’ll never find yourself more willing to genuinely root for a serial killer. It’s bloody liberating.

Dexter Season 2 is out now on DVD (£24.68).

Waltz with Bashir.

In this favourite from 2008's Cannes Film Festival, animation and documentary meld with critically acclaimed results. Director Ari Folman filmed a number of interviews about people's experiences during the 1982 Lebanon War, and then this live-action foota ge was turned into striking animation by a team of talented artists.

Waltz with Bashir is out now on DVD (£8.98) and Blu-ray (£12.98).

Free Agents.

Originally screened as part of Channel 4's 2007 COMEDY SHOWCASE series, talent agency rom-com FREE AGENTS has been turned into a series of its own. Stephen Managan (GREEN WING) and Sharon Horgan (PULLING) star as the luckless-in-love Alex and Helen. After unexpectedly spending the night together, the pair still need to muster up some professionalism for their jobs at glamorous talent agency CMA. Which is easier said than done with the eccentric, sex-obsessed Stephen (Anthony Head) in charge.

Extras: Making of Documentary, Out-Takes, Featurettes, Improvised Materials, Trailers, Photo Gallery, Commentary

Free Agents is out now on DVD (£11.98).

Quantum of Solace:

Daniel Craig returns as Ian Fleming's most famous creation in Quantum of Solace, the first film in the James Bond series to follow directly on from the previous entry. Continuing where Casino Royale concluded, Quantum of Solace finds Bond on a perilous mi ssion to uncover the truth behind the betrayal of his beloved Vesper, while keeping one step ahead of M (Judi Dench – Mrs Henderson Presents, Shakespeare In Love), the CIA and a shadowy organisation fronted by the diabolical Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalri c – The Diving Bell And The Butterfly, Marie Antoinette).

Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright – Basquiat, Oliver Stone's W) and the dubious Rene Mathis (Giancarlo Giannini – Black Belly of the Tarantula, Seven Beauties) also return for this high octane sequel directed by internationally-renowned German filmmaker Marc F orster (The Kite Runner, Finding Neverland). Though Quantum of Solace takes its gritty and uncompromising lead from Casino Royale, many of the series' hallmark ingredients are present, including a bevy of beautiful women which includes Gemma Arterton (St Trinians, Rocknrolla) and Olga Kurylenko (Le Serpent, Hitman), and a post-modern music score from series veteran David Arnold.

Quantum of Solace is out now on DVD (£12.98) and Blu-ray (£17.98).

Tripods: Series 1 & 2.

Science fiction fans viewing British television in the 1980s had much to contend with. Limited budgets and unconvincing special effects often required a leap of faith of such size as to put people off. But, in the midst of this, emerged The Tripods, a fon dly-remembered sci-fi hit of the time, of which both series are present on this DVD set.

Adapted from the books by John Christopher, The Tripods is set late in the 21st century, with humanity living in peaceful servitude, albeit under the eye of huge alien machines. These machines--The Tripods--fit the young with special headgear that will en sure future humans are similarly subservient to the alien invaders, and it’s when two teenagers, Will and Henry, look to evade such treatment that the adventure begins.

Hearing stories of other ‘uncapped’ humans in the south, they set off on a journey to find them, while being pursued by The Tripods, who naturally aren’t best happy.

There are many pleasant surprises to The Tripods, even rewatching it today, and the programme has stood up really very well to the rigours of time. The limited budget means that the deployment of the Tripods themselves is kept for carefully chosen moments , and they’re convincing, at time intimidating invaders. But it’s the storytelling that’s key here, and it’s that which should ensure this DVD release earns The Tripods a new collection of fans. Well worth picking up.

Tripods: Series 1 & 2 is out now on DVD (£17.88).

Zack And Miri Make A Porno.

After the success of Knocked Up, Seth Rogen pairs up with another comely comedienne in Zack and Miri Make a Porno. In this Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy) comedy, two desperate friends (Rogen and Slither's Elizabeth Banks--Meet Dave, W) decide to earn a little extra money by creating their own adult film, but they also discover that they may be more than just pals.

Zack And Miri Make A Porno is out now on DVD (£9.98) and Blu-ray (£14.98).

Star Trek: The Animated Series.

Following on from the original series, Star Trek: The Animated Series sees the crew of the Starship Enterprise facing new, more elaborate adventures. Utilising 1970s state-of-the-art special effects, the animators were able to let their imaginations run u nbridled in ways that could never have been realized in the live action series.

There's an underwater adventure, an encounter with a giant fire-breathing two-headed dragon, and the crew gets shrunk down to 1cm. Any self-respecting Trekkie will want this in their collection. Includes all 22 episodes.

Star Trek: The Animated Series/b> is out now on DVD (£29.39).

March 20th :

The Doctor and Peri are then captured and forced to take Lytton and the Cybermen in the TARDIS to the Cybermen' s home planet Telos. The Cybermen have stolen a time vessel from another race and plan to change history by crashing Halley's Comet into Earth and obliterating it before it can bring about the demise of their original home world, Mondas, in 1986.

The IT Crowd: Series 3.

The IT Crowd: Series 3 is out now on DVD (£12.98) and 3-DVD Boxset (£17.98)

Eagle Eye.

Eagle Eye reteams Shia LaBeouf with his Disturbia director D J Caruso, and the two of them prove once more that they know how to knock out a decent thriller. Kicking off with lots of serious faces, military advisors and a decision to make about whether to bomb a target or not, this quick, brutal introduction not only kick starts the plot developments, but it also brings in the advanced technology that underpins much of what Eagle Eye does. Not that it’s all that plausible, but it’s the kind of film that v ery much rewards turning your brain down a notch, and being willing to sit back to be entertained.

Should you do that, then Eagle Eye is a very enjoyable tech-thriller, that papers over its cracks by racing out of the traps at speed, and never really looking back. Fortunately, it remembers to keep you entertained as it does so, and Shia LaBeouf already eats roles like this up in his sleep. The plot of Eagle Eye finds LaBeouf’s character receiving a mobile phone call with strict instructions to do exactly what he’s told, else things are going to go very wrong, very quickly. Michelle Monaghan is in a sim ilar position, and the pair of them find themselves caught up in a sinister plot that we won’t be spoiling for you here.

Eagle Eye is out now on DVD (£11.98) and Blu-ray (£15.98).

The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas:

Berlin, 1942. Eight-year-old Bruno knows nothing of the Final Solution and the Holocaust. He is oblivious to the appalling cruelties being inflicted on the people of Europe by his country. All he knows is that his father was promoted and he has been moved from a comfortable home in Berlin to a house in a desolate area where there is nothing to do and no-one to play with. Then he meets Shmuel, a boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the adjoining wire fence and who, like the other people there, wears a uniform of striped pajamas. Bruno's friendship with Shmuel will take him from innocence to revelation, as their secret meetings result in a friendship that has startling and devastating consequences.

Based upon the novel by John Boyne, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a heart-wrenching tale of an unlikely friendship that forms between the son of a concentration camp commander and a young Jewish boy during World War II. Directed by renowned British fi lmmaker Mark Hermon (Little Voice, Brassed Off) the film features a cast that includes Vera Farmiga (The Departed, Breaking and Entering) and David Thewlis (Mike Leigh's Naked, The Big Lebowski).

The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas is out now on DVD (£12.98) and Boxset (£14.98).

Saw V.

Continuing on with its story despite the death of namesake killer Jigsaw in the third installment, SAW V concerns itself with detailing who will carry on with his bloody work. Director David Hackl, the production designer on the previous three films, reta ins their familiar charnel house look. Though there are fewer grisly death sequences, faithful viewers will enjoy the creative plot twists. The film opens with a man strapped to a table above a pendulum. As the sharp blade begins swinging over his stomach , he has only a minute to stop it by inserting his hands into a device that will crush them. When the machine malfunctions, it's clear that it wasn't the work of the meticulous Jigsaw.

Meanwhile, FBI Agent Strahm (Scott Patterson) continues the investigation he began in the previous film, only to wake up to find himself wearing a glass helmet filled with water. With a minimum of self-mutilation, he escapes and continues his investigatio n with the hunch that Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) is somehow involved in the new rash of killings. Before long, a new group of strangers wakes up in Jigsaw's lair to face a series of brutal tests, and Jigsaw's ex-wife, Jill, is given a mysterious box at the execution of his will.

An enormously popular and critic-proof series, SAW gives its fans what they want--creatively executed blood and guts. The fifth instalment in as many years, SAW V is more subdued in that department, but the sequences it does contain deliver the goods. Sev eral lengthy flashbacks also allow Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) to make a few appearances. While SAW V isn't the place for beginners to start, those who have stuck with the story this far will find it a fitting entry, happy that SAW VI is just around the bend.

Saw V is out now on DVD (£11.98), Blu-ray (£16.68) and 1-5 Boxset (£32.99).

Generation Kill: Complete HBO Series.

This gritty, seven-part miniseries chronicles the befuddling first 40 days of the Iraq war from the perspective of the Marines' First Recon Battalion. As the soldiers journey into Baghdad, they face unclear conditions and bear the often deadly brunt of mi sguided bureaucratic decisions. Read our exclusive interview with ex-Marine Rudy Reyes on his time making the mini-series.

Based on Evan Wright's best-selling book, and brought to the screen by the creators of The Wire, David Simon and Ed Burns, Generation Kill's viewpoint remains firmly fixed on the ground level, rather than proselytise the show uses its large cast and broad canvas to show war in all its visceral chaos, allowing viewers the chance to take what they can from steeping themselves in the black humour and confused terror of the experience.

Generation Kill: Complete HBO Series is out now on DVD (£27.98).

Ghost Town.

Deadpan hilarity and quirky charm come alive in Ghost Town, starring Britain's favourite comedian Ricky Gervais (The Office) as social reject Bertram Pincus. Emmy award winner and seven times Bafta winner Gervais proves his Hollywood worth in this transat lantic feel good love story about a man, a woman and a ghost. Pincus is a New York City dentist with horrendous people skills. When a routine surgery goes awry, Pincus is pronounced dead, but is miraculously revived seven minutes later. The ill-mannered M anhattanite suffers only one lasting after-effect; the ability to see and speak to the dead. Word soon gets out in the spirit community and Pincus is irritate to discover he's the go-to guy for every phantom with unfinished business in the city.

At the forefront of the ghostly mob is recently deceased Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear--Little Miss Sunshine, Baby Mama), who is determined to stop the remarriage of his widow, Gwen (Tea Leoni--Spanglish, Fun with Dick and Jane). The laughs unfold when the prickly and romantically inexperienced Pincus, smitten with Gwen, tries to woo her away from her betrothed--with hysterically awkward results.

With sharp performances and beautifully dry Gervais execution, Ghost Town won't fail to make viewers laugh out loud. With a host of special features including commentary from renowned director David Koepp and a 'Making Ghost Town' featurette, this is one DVD that should be in the collection of every Ricky Gervais fan.

Special Features: Commentary by David Koepp and Ricky Gervais, Making Ghost Town, Ghostly Effects, Some people can do it

Ghost Town is out now on DVD (£11.98) and Blu-ray (£15.98).
