news page pic The Stepford Wives (2004) (£19.99, Universal)

An all-star cast remakes the 1975 socio-political horror flick, The Stepford Wives. After being fired as president of a television network, Joanna (Nicole Kidman) has a nervous breakdown, prompting her husband Walter (Matthew Broderick) to take her to a simple Connecticut town called Stepford to recuperate.

But Stepford is a little strange: The schlubby husbands congregate at a closed-doors men's club, while the wives - all in bright summer frocks and air-brushed smiles - exercise to keep their hourglass figures and cook endless pastries. Joanna, along with new arrivals Bobbie (Bette Midler) and Roger (the very funny Roger Bart), soon discover that the mastermind of Stepford (Christopher Walken) has used cybernetics to "perfect" womankind. The Stepford Wives has some satirical zingers (from sneaky screenwriter Paul Rudnick), but the basic idea has lost a lot of gas since 1975.

news page pic Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital (£44.99, Columbia)

Kingdom Hospital is the first television series written and produced by Stephen King. Kingdom Hospital is not like other hospitals - it is built on the wreckage of two horrific fires. The first fire, during the civil war, burned down the Gates Falls Mill where small children toiled away under nightmarish conditions - nearly all of the long-suffering children were trapped and died in the fire. The second fire destroyed the "old Kingdom," a creepy hospital where an evil doctor performed hideous experiments on patients. The "new Kingdom" is the site of strange, paranormal phenomena, where the unquiet dead still roam. Every week, over 20 regular and recurring characters check in and out of Kingdom Hospital, playing out the eternal conflict between good and evil.

news page pic Crime Scene Investigation 2 : Dark Motives (PC £19.99, Ubisoft)

Although it's not the most obvious subject matter for a video game, the first CSI game was a huge hit and quickly led to this new sequel, subtitled Dark Motives. As fans of the series would expect, there are no action skills required of you in the game, just a cool head and the ability to approach each of the five different cases in a logical and methodical fashion. Dark Motives casts you as a new recruit to the Las Vegas CSI department and as such partners you with a variety of characters from the show. All of the original cast provide their own voiceovers, including William Petersen and Jorja Fox, and thanks to the newly improved graphics they all now look much more like themselves than before.

The actual process of solving a crime and playing the game is little changed from the previous title, as you slowly explore a crime scene, examining the subtly highlighted physical clues and interrogating suspects.

  • news page pic Formula One 2004 (PS2 £39.99, Sony)

Formula One 04 brings the new Shanghai and Bahrain circuits to Sony's established series of F1 simulations. But this release is more than a mere update: it completes a remarkable about-turn in the franchise's fortunes. Compared with previous seasons' Formula One games, 04 is a terrifically comprehensive facsimile of motorsport's premier discipline.

Those new tracks--along with the already-famous roster of F1 circuits (including Monaco, San Marino and Silverstone)--are rendered in remarkably accurate fashion. Every last real-world detail has been replicated, giving players the opportunity to race on circuits that are virtually indistinguishable from those televised every other weekend. Team colours, as well as commentary from James Allen and Martin Brundle, serve to complete the televisual feel.

Before taking to the track, car setup can easily be tuned in the game's garage area. This provision is welcome and it's simple to navigate. Excessive mechanical jargon is dropped in favour of common terms, giving players of all levels the platform from which to launch a realistic bid for the drivers' Championship.

With its perfect blend of accessibility and lifelike simulation, Formula One 04 takes pole. As Murray Walker would say, it's "Go! Go! Go!"

The game world has unpredictable weather, a variety of pedestrian types who act in unique ways, changing times of day and night and a multi-tiered, fully corrupt police force. The revenge plot offers strong story elements balanced with the game's non-linear freedom of movement.

It was supposed to be the last job you and Vinnie would do for the mob. After this, you'd both have enough money to escape Liberty City for good. Then Vinnie's getaway car went up in a ball of flames, along with all the cash. Suddenly every cop in the city is chasing you down. You're determined to get out of Liberty City, but not before you find Vinnie's murderers and turn the tables on whomever it is that's out to get you. news page pic Midnight Club 2 (PS2 £19.99, Take 2)

Midnight Club II builds on the illegal street racing fun found in the PS2 launch title Midnight Club. Like the original, it pits you against street toughs in non-linear street races in which you can earn new gear, new cars, and even new controls--you're a novice driver at the start, but by the end you're a pro who can land on all four wheels after a jump, expertly control a power slide turn, and much more.

New in Midnight Club II are the presence of the police and the ability to drive a motorcycle. Much of the game consists of cruising around three large and well rendered cities: Paris, Tokyo, and Los Angeles, following a red dot on a map. The dot is a rival racer; once you track and chase them down, you flash your high beams and then you can race them. It's a clever way of giving you a warm up, keeping you immersed in the game, and best of all, teaching you the layout of each city.

Racing is fun, fast, and furious. This isn't a simulation, it's an arcade-style racer--but the physics system is internally consistent so it feels more realistic than it actually is. Rockstar has put a premium on keeping you in control, keeping the thrill-factor high, and giving you a heart-stopping sense of speed. The graphics are fantastic and the cities are incredibly detailed.

news page pic Painkiller (Various £29.99/39.99, Dreamcatcher)

Painkiller is a first-person shooter. Painkiller contains 19 unique single-player levels. The levels are illuminated through both static and dynamic lighting, including accurate real-world light using a light distribution model that creates photorealistic ambient lighting and separate real-time lights for enemies, objects and weapons. All the levels also incorporate advanced vertex and pixel shaders, including water, glass, volumetric lights and fog.

Painkiller allows players to shoot anything that moves and, once killed, the souls of enemy monsters can be consumed to increase player health. Once shot to pieces, monsters and objects leave gold coins behind, which allow players to upgrade speed and weapons as well as maps and numerous other power-ups between levels.

Painkiller features 20 different enemy monsters, each with their own unique behavioural patterns and attacks. Painkiller's weapon system has been designed specifically to avoid weapon overkill, by providing the ideal number of weapons, with primary and secondary modes, so that each is truly useful. For advanced Painkiller players, primary and secondary weapons can be used in spectacular "combo" attacks.

Finally, Painkiller's adrenaline-numbing effects give an extra punch in multi-player mode. Up to 32 players have been allowed for across five multi-player modes including Deathmatch, where the player takes on the world; Team Deathmatch; People Can Fly, a modification of Deathmatch One on One with rocket launchers; Voosh, where all players have the same weapon and The Light Bearer, which assumes that Quad damage never wears off. The multi-player modes really are hardcore.

news page pic Red Dead Revolver (Various £39.99, Rockstar)

A blazing third-person gun-slinging action game, Red Dead Revolver is fuelled by a revenge-driven storyline punctuated by dark humour. The arcade-style gameplay blends seamlessly with the elements of the Wild West era. Full-motion capture cut scenes and breathtaking visuals fuel the cinematic ambition of the game. Inspired by the Spaghetti Westerns of the 60s and 70s, Red Dead Revolver is the first game to fully explore the Wild West era, rather than use it as a backdrop. It is a homage to the classic tales of vengeance on the untamed frontier, where life is reduced to its simplest form--the clothes on your back, your gun, and maybe a horse.

news page pic Spider-Man 2: The Movie (Various £39.99, Activision)

Just as the new film is a great improvement on the already solid original, so too is Spider-Man 2: The Movie (the game) a significant improvement on previous video game simulations of New York's friendly neighbourhood web-slinger.

As you'd expect, the new game works along the same basic lines as the last one but is actually a very noble attempt to completely expand the concept and the way it's implemented. The biggest change is the that the game is now much more free-form, rather than being strictly mission based, and you can swing around New York City all you like, getting involved in side quests (such as stopping minor robberies) before getting around to the wider plot.

The actual business of web-slinging has been greatly improved so that your webbing now actually connects with buildings, instead of just attaching to thin air, and so the whole business of getting around the city becomes more "realistic". The combat system has also been completely overhauled, although it's still fair to say that the interior levels are far less entertaining than bouncing around New York and getting involved in aerial scraps.

The game realises this though and the majority of the action now takes place outside as you not only follow the plot of the movie, taking on main bad guy Dr Octopus, but also tackling some of Spidey's other villains from the comic books, including the Vulture, Rhino and Shocker--as well as meeting alternative love interest Black Cat. Hopefully someday all comic book games will be this good

Most movies or TV programmes that get made into video games don't usually turn out too well, with most of the effort and expense going into securing the licence rather than making the game. The idea that a game of any genuine quality could come out of a toy licence would normally be dismissed out of hand, but believe it or not Transformers is superb.

Based on the recent Armada toy line, rather than the 80s toys remembered by twenty and thirty-somethings, the main characters still have familiar names such as Optimus Prime, Megatron and Starscream. The game itself takes obvious influences from Halo, of all things, as you roam a series of superbly rendered landscapes fighting off hordes of enemy robots. You only have one basic weapon for each of the three playable characters but you can augment this by finding one of the large range of Mini-Cons within the game. These smaller robots offer extras such as shields, infra-red vision and even a hang glider. You can only equip four at a time though, making for some tough tactical decisions.

You can, of course, also transform into a vehicle at any time and this is made absolutely necessary by the sheer size of the levels, which seem to stretch out for miles. So forget the licence (or not, if you're a fan) and check out the best thing to happen to the PS2 for ages.

Unreal Tournament 2004 is the next evolution of the first-person action game. From the lethal bomber to the nefarious spider mines--players will work as teams to control map points and win the conflict. There are plans for the game to include nine onslaught maps.

news page pic World Championship Rugby (Various £39.99, Acclaim)

Acclaim's World Championship Rugby arrives on the back of England's famous World Cup victory, and it is further cause for celebration. Developed by the team behind PlayStation classic Jonah Lomu Rugby, World Championship takes that game's design to the next level. Player animation in particular is really impressive, and there's fine detail drawn in the game's comprehensive selection of stadia. (Witness the exact replication of Twickenham.)

Rugby fans will be pleased to see all the major nations included (and some not so major, such as Japan and the US) coupled with accurate player likenesses. The World Cup can be played through, as can various tours and other international cups and leagues. This is an authentic and exhaustive simulation. And the game plays in a realistic manner, too: passing is simple to effect, kicking is intuitive, while scrums and mauls are carried off expertly with the aid of some good old button mashing. World Championship Rugby is an accessible and lifelike take on a sport that is quite difficult to simulate. Even those who aren't passionate about rugby will find that there is plenty of enjoyment to be had here.
