Collector's Edition
Voodoo Vince (Xbox £39.99, Microsoft)
Voodoo Vince is an outrageous venture from the streets of New Orleans to the depths of a Louisiana bayou populated with
quirky monsters. Voodoo Vince allows players to explore and fight as a burlap voodoo doll who is on a quest to find the
whereabouts of his keeper, Madam Charmaine. In true voodoo style, players encounter and defeat monsters and villains by
inflicting damage to Vince. By racing under a falling safe, jumping into a high-speed blender or leaping under falling
rubble, Vince is sure to defeat his enemies, all while managing to escape completely unscathed.
Players can employ more than 30 voodoo attacks that do outrageous things to Vince, but it's the monsters who end up
hurting. Players must actually use dangers and hazards instead of running from them. Falling safes, prickly pushpins
and bolts of lightning bring a whole new meaning to the phrase "no pain, no gain." Thrust into the depths of a twisted
and dangerous world, Vince must trek through crawfish-laden swamps; a graveyard filled with imps and lost zombies, a
fantastic French Quarter and a network of boggy sewers.
As the game unfolds, Vince must master and pilot a number of vehicles, including a fan boat, a submarine, an aeroplane -
even a rat gives him a lift at one point. Vince must master one mind-bending mini game after another to complete his
quest. No adventure would be complete without its host of surly characters. Offbeat characters with all the charm of New
Orleans are around every corner. Vince encounters everything from Gingerdeadmen, who are not exactly sugar-coated, to a
pair of intoxicated gas pumps that offer up a fiery challenge.
Voodoo Vince
Wallace and Gromit: Project Zoo (Various £19.99, Acclaim)
The simple plots finds the evil Feathers McGraw taking control of the local zoo--and more notably locking up all the
infant animals. They need saving and that's where our heroic duo come in. To rescue them, there's an entertaining
platform game in the way, with some little diversions and mini-arcade games to keep things ticking along.
It's well put together too: the graphics are strong and the interjections of the two lead characters, especially in the
numerous cut scenes, will frequently raise a chuckle. The levels pit you against many of McGraw's gang and, as you'd
expect, there are numerous items to collect and lots to explore. A nice added feature is that Wallace can turn some of
the objects into some batty invention to help you on your way.
It's a very easy game to get into and while the action won't get your pulse pounding, Project Zoo sets it stall out
early as a provider of some good, leisurely, family-friendly entertainment. That it captures the flavour of Wallace &
Gromit so well is a very welcome bonus.
Wallace & Gromit
World Rally Championship 3 (PS2 £39.99, Sony)
It will come as little surprise to hear that authenticity is the forte of WRC 3: The Official Game of the FIA World
Rally Championship. Sony's rally-driving simulation pulls out all the stops and easily lives up to its name. Right off
the starting line, WRC 3 looks the part. As the scenery flies by, players will feel the remarkable sensation of actually
being in the country where the course is located. The road itself is realistically uneven and the cars react exactly as
would real-life rally motors. The spectators at trackside and the team members at either end of stages look like real
people. Nothing has been overlooked, and the effect is spectacular.
WRC 3 is massively enjoyable and perfectly playable. Cars will hug corners, drift out of them and then just manage to
hold to the surface as they enter the next straight. In short, WRC's cars handle like real WRC cars. With the official
FIA licence come real driver names, all the cars and courses from the World Rally Championship and countless small
details (correct advertising, for instance). Fans of rally driving will be blown away by the game's realism, and fans of
racing games will be impressed by its finely tuned gameplay. WRC 3 is the complete package.
WRC 3
XIII (Various £39.99, Ubisoft)
XIII features a conspiracy of epic proportions, and players will unravel clues behind the story's compelling and
mysterious events. The game includes themes of amnesia, in which players must uncover sinister plots against themselves,
the US government, and even the president himself. The only clues players have are the roman numerals XIII tattooed on
their shoulder and a key to a safe deposit box in a New York bank. A shadow of your former self, you are launched into
the evil world of assassination, conspiracy and intrigue. Who are you? All you know is that the president has been shot,
you are hunted by a killer, the FBI and the US army... You find out that XIII truly is unlucky for some.
This unique first-person shooter will engage gamers in an epic conspiracy and features cel-shaded graphics and unique
flashback visuals. As a completely interactive graphic novel, XIII creates a visually stunning effect unique to the
action genre.
