In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year,

A brief analysis on the current chart situation...
16 new entries this week, 0 climbers, 0 non-movers and 24 going down.
Big fallers include Hanson (5 to 14), Spice Girls (10 to 20), Ocean Colour
Scene (9 to 23), Pulp (8 to 27), Conner Reeves (14 to 32), and
Metallica (13 to 38).
The world of pop was rocked on Saturday 22nd November when INXS's lead singer,
Michael Hutchence was found dead in his hotel room in Sydney, Australia,
hanging from the door with a leather belt around his neck only hours after
apparently seeming happy in a warm-up session preparing for his band's 20th
anniversary tour.
While his cause of death has been confirmed as hanging, it's not known whether
it was deliberate - no suicide note was left - or whether it was the result of
an accident in a sex game known as 'auto-erotic asphyxia' - starving the brain
of oxygen to get a better orgasm - something which will be found out over the
coming weeks as the investigation continues.
As his partner Paula Yates flew to Australia with their 16-month-old
daughter, Tiger Lily, she threw verbal stones in the direction of her ex-
Bob Geldof, blaming the divorce proceedings as the cause of Michael
Hutchence taking his own life.
2. Gary Glitter arrested over child pornography
At first dominating the music headlines, but later drowned out by the above,
70s pop star Gary Glitter was arrested after taking his PC into a branch
of "PC World", where they found child porn on it. A raid on his house produced
various videos and literature.
Whether these allegations prove true or not, it may affect his stature as
the character he is, as he was dropped from this year's Children In Need
telethon, and also the forthcoming film named after one of his hits, I Love
You Love Me Love, and may be dropped from some little known film called
Spiceworld.
3. Spice Girls - will they or won't they?
Last Tuesday (18th November), the girls held a press conference stating that
they are NOT going to split up, despite each member having talks last week
about separate singing careers. In a couple of weeks they'll be performing at
the Smash Hits Poll-Winners Party. How will the reaction fare there, esp. as
the new album has sold less than 300,000 in two weeks of the 1.4 million copies
sent to the shops.
This week they're giving another press conference on Thursday 27th November
in Holland, in which questions can only be asked by school children writing
for school newspapers. Just about their level then...
Of this week's highlights and lowlights...
39 Rosie Gaines - I Surrender :O ===
Second single from Rosie Gaines Weight after the Top 10 dirge, "Closer Than
Close", which does as well as it deserves.
29 Finley Quaye - It's Great When We're Together * !!!
Third Top 40 hit from Finley and another laid back song keeping in tune with
the first two, "Sunday Shining" and "Even After All". Perfect summer music,
even for the winter.
10 Louise - Let's Go Round Again :O ===
Dear, oh dear. Following the average "Arms Around the World", Louise releases
a track far too early for the Xmas rush which is just a bog-standard cover
version of the Average White Band No.12 hit from 1980 and as such a complete
waste of time.
9 Aaron Carter - Crush On You :O ===
I've no idea who this is, but I've only heard a bit of it on a radio advert
and it's a cover version of the Jets song from 1987, which sounds more like
the Jets on helium.
Absolute crap. Whoever's buying this deserves to be put down.
8 Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up
Never ones to shy away from the family market, The Prodigy release their
first single from their July-released album, "The Fat of the Land".
I've not heard it, but I've heard it's meant to be an anti-violence track
and not one that they're inciting people to take the named action. However,
neither radio or TV have taken heed and are neither playing it or listing
it by name. When the Top 10 in The Chart Show appeared, no title was given,
but just "The Prodigy".
3 Steven Houghton - Wind Beneath My Wings :O ===
This year's Robson or Jerome. An actor from ITV's London's Burning records
the song and releases an album on the same day after premiering the track
two weeks ago for his screen-girlfriend in a pub, making an average in-pub
performance sounding like he had a full orchestra behind him (!)
1 Various - Perfect Day *1st Week at No.1*
About 4 months ago a promotional video plugging the BBC began to appear
regularly featuring many different artists singing Lou Reed's "Perfect Day"
including David Bowie, Bono, Morcheeba, Gabrielle and Lou himself, in a bid
to prove that the BBC covers every element of music in their broadcasting,
although clearly heavy metal isn't among them...
Closer to November we found that the track was to be used as this year's
Children In Need single, and as such sold 200,000 copies in first week,
kicking Aqua off the top slot, and damning all chance Natalie Imbruglia ever
had of making No.1 with her first single.

NAKED WITHOUT YOU...................................Roachford (Columbia)
This week's there's new entries in the Top 10 for Celine Dion (Let's Talk
About Love, 1), knocking Spice Girls off the top, and Metallica (Reload, 4).
Elsewhere there are new entries for Robson & Jerome (Happy Days - The Best
Of, 20), Steven Houghton (Steven Houghton, 21), Led Zepplin (BBC Sessions, 23),
and Peter Andre (Time, 28).
The second single from Tina's "Wildest Dreams" album, this song followed
the Bond theme, Goldeneye, into the charts, making No.23 in March and was
another epic effort, the video for this one being very flashy indeed with
Tina turning into a computer graphic emitting fire from all orifices. Oo-er!
Her other singles released last year went from the incredibly average
(Something Beautiful Remains, In Your Wildest Dreams), to the incredibly
crap (On Silent Wings, Missing You).
The end bit :
Well, that's it for now. If you want to be added to the Widescreen
Video and Laserdisc lists, just mail me at
