A brief analysis on the current chart situation...
Given that it's Xmas, the charts tend to stagnate with many more singles being
sold and very few shooting into the Top 10.
8 new entries this week, 7 climbers (Janet Jackson from 6 to 5, Louise 23 to 21,
Backstreet Boys 25 to 23, Hot Chocolate 27 to 24, Seahorses 28 to 26, Verve
from 29 to 27 and PF Project/Ewan McGregor from 31 to 28), 5 non-movers
(All Saints at 4, Natalie Imbruglia at 8, Celine Dion/Barbra Streisand at 13,
Steps at 20, and Sheryl Crow at 22).
Big fallers include Propellorheads (19 to 30), U2 (12 to 33), Sting (17 to 34),
and The Levellers (24 to 25).
Third single of the year for Aerosmith, and third Top 40 hit following
"Falling In Love (Can Be Hard On The Knees)" which made No.22 in February,
and "Hole In My Soul" which made No.28 in June.
25 Paul McCartney - Beautiful Night * !!!
Third single from Macca's "Flaming Pie" album, and it's excellent.
The first two, "Young Boy", which made No.19, and "The World Tonight", which
just missed the Top 40, both featured in the Billy Crystal/Robin Williams
comedy, "Father's Day".
15 Chicken Shed Theatre Company - I Am In Love With The World
This year's obligatory charity single, and this one is for Princess Diana,
with the other single from Elton John having just left the Top 10 for the
second time after it climbed back in again last week.
It was meant to be the single with the third-best odds to be the Xmas No.1,
but at No.15, it clearly failed in that capacity.
14 Vanilla - No Way No Way :O ===
Godawful pop song to the tune of the Muppets' Animal character, "Manna-manna",
and endlessly plugged by Denise Van (not Van) Outen on Channel 4's
"The Big Breakfast".
And to think just a few short weeks ago when first released, this sorry excuse
for a single made No.75...
2 (1) Teletubbies - Teletubbies Say Eh-Oh!
So Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po failed in their bid to get
the Xmas No.1 leaving just one band to take the title.
Still, there's always next year, especially with a Teletubbies film in the
pipeline.
1 Spice Girls - Too Much *1st Week at No.1*
And so they make it six singles hitting the top slot in a row, with all but
"Wannabe" actually going straight into the top slot on their first week out,
to be followed on Boxing Day by the UK release of their first feature film,
"Spiceworld".
But what next for the girls? The first two singles, "Wannabe" and "Say You'll
Be There" hit No.1, while they were beefed up by the press, but the third,
"2 Become 1" was a Xmas single, and the fourth was a double-header combination
of a Comic Relief charity track, "Who Do You Think You Are?" and a Mother's Day
song, "Mama".
More recently, the first single from the new album, "Spice Up Your Life",
was a hi-energy track and a sure-fire No.1, but doubts were cast over the future
of the band after they sacked their manager, Simon Fuller, and the press
backlash began. Their luck has held out by scooping the Xmas No.1 single for
the second year in a row, but the track being played on the TV ad for the
album, "Stop", sounding like something that even Boyzone would reject, is
probably their next single and I doubt very much will hit the top slot.
