The initial bit :

In the last chart of 1998, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1999, I'll be going through the list one by one starting with the Top 10 in alphabetical order.

This week : 12 new entries, 1 re-entry, 0 climbers, 1 non-movers & 26 downers.

new entry re-entry climber faller non mover

CHART TIME !

(* - my current favourites)
(!!! - Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) - Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation...

12 new entries and 1 re-entry :

  • 40 David Sylvian - I Surrender
  • 37 (42 RE) Spice Girls - Goodbye
  • 36 Men Of Vizion - Do You Feel Me?
  • 34 Take 5 - Never Had It So Good
  • 22 Echo & The Bunnymen - Rust
  • 20 Spacedust - Let's Get Down
  • 16 Delirious? - See the Star
  • 15 Tina Cousins - Killin' Time
  • 12 Underworld - Push Upstairs
  • 9 Andy Williams - Music To Watch The Girls Go By *
  • 8 Kele Le Roc - My Love
  • 4 Robbie Williams - Strong :O ===
  • 1 B*Witched - Blame It On The Weatherman *

so the following dropped out :

  • 40 Jay-Z featuring Amil & Ja Rule - Can I Get A Decent Record
  • 39 Status Quo - The Way It Goes
  • 38 A+ - Enjoy Yourself
  • 37 Cher - Believe
  • 36 Bryan Adams featuring Melanie C - When You're Gone
  • 35 Nsync - I Want You Back
  • 34 QFX - Say You'll Be Mine
  • 33 Skunk Anansie - Charlie Big Potato
  • 31 Elton John & Leann Rimes - Written in the Stars
  • 30 Barenaked Ladies - One Week
  • 29 Kavana - Will You Wait For Me?
  • 28 Ginuwine - What's So Different?
  • 27 Lauryn Hill - Ex-Factor

    0 climbers :

    1 non-movers :

    and 26 going down.

  • 33 (13) Orbital
  • 28 (10) REM
  • 19 (11) Roxette
  • 14 (5) Manic Street Preachers

New entries from No.41-75. See who missed out this time round :

  • 44 Capriccio - Everybody Get Up
  • 45 Moloko - Sing It Back
  • 46 Blackout - Gotta Have Hope
  • 51 Tilt - Children
  • 53 Keith Sweat - I'm Not Ready
  • 56 Johnson - Say You Love Me
  • 62 Jamestown featuring Jocelyn Brown - I Believe
  • 72 The Creatures - Say

Of this week's highlights and lowlights...

    37 (42 RE) Spice Girls - Goodbye

You say Goodbye, and they say hello again. Why are they back in the charts with the same single? Good question, although it may be down to them taking part in the current NSPCC TV advertising campaign against child abuse which shows how people are more likely to look away rather than face the truth.

9 Andy Williams - Music To Watch The Girls Go By *

It only made No.33 in May 1967, but this time the classic, catchy tune gets a Top 10 placing from a re-release thanks to an advert for Fiat Punto cars. I've got one of these, but I don't get that many girls ogling it. Then again, there's so many Puntos on the road that they're probably done ogling for the day.

    4 Robbie Williams - Strong :O ===

Replace "Strong" with "Weak and bland", which is just how this slow, turgid effort treads out. Very dull indeed.

    1 B*witched - Blame It On The Weatherman * *1st Week at No.1*

Four singles and four instant No.1's. B*witched are the first group ever to go straight in at No.1, which should be congratulated... if it wasn't the result of obvious marketing strategies which are causing it.

This is the 9th single to go straight in at No.1.

  • 1. Fatboy Slim - Praise You
  • 2. 911 - A Little Bit More
  • 3. Offspring - Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)
  • 4. Armand Van Helden featuring Duane Harden - You Don't Know Me
  • 5. Blondie - Maria
  • 6. Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away
  • 7. Britney Spears - Baby One More Time
  • 8. Boyzone - When The Going Gets Tough
  • 9. B*witched - Blame It On The Weatherman

    Dominator's Top 50 of 1998

    13. Bernard Butler - Stay

The ex-Suede star goes solo and makes a superb debut single, which made No.12 in January last year, and is a rather atmospheric ballad that grabs the senses by the balls and drags you in. If only it could have made the Top 10.

It was followed by "Not Alone" (No.27, Mar 98) and "A Change Of Heart" (No.45, June 98).

    The end bit :

Well, that's it for now. If you want to be added to the Widescreen Video and Laserdisc lists, just mail me at Charts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
