The initial bit :

In the last chart of 1998, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1999, I'll be going through the list one by one starting with the Top 10 in alphabetical order.

This week : 9 new entries, 0 climbers, 2 non-movers & 29 downers.

new entry re-entry climber faller non mover

CHART TIME !

(* - my current favourites)
(!!! - Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) - Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation...

9 new entries:

  • 38 Moby - Bodyrock
  • 25 Daniel O'Donnell - Uno Mas
  • 20 Catatonia - Londinium *
  • 18 Blockster - Grooveline
  • 17 The Cardigans - Hanging Around *
  • 13 Dina Carroll - Without Love :O ===
  • 8 Yomanda - Synth and Strings
  • 6 Destiny's Child - Bills, Bills, Bills
  • 2 Steps - Love's Got a Hold on my Heart

so the following dropped out :

  • 40 Chicane featuring Maire Brennan of Clannad - Saltwater
  • 39 Gomez - Bring it On
  • 38 Suede - She's in Fashion
  • 37 TLC - No Scrubs
  • 36 Mase - Get Ready
  • 34 Justin - It's All About You
  • 32 Orbital - Nothing Left
  • 27 Three Amigos - Louie Louie
  • 26 The Goo Goo Dolls - Iris

    0 climbers :

    2 non-movers :

  • 1 Ricky Martin
  • 5 Vengaboys

    and 29 going down.

    Big fallers include :

  • 31 (11) Manic Street Preachers
  • 40 (16) Gary Barlow

New entries from No.41-75. See who missed out this time round :

  • 41 Def Leppard - Promises
  • 45 Freestylers - Here We Go
  • 52 Barenaked Ladies - Call and Answer
  • 56 Marlo - How Do I Know?
  • 59 Sea Fruit - Hello World
  • 71 Jon The Dentist Vs Ollie Jaye - Imagination
  • 75 Luminaire - Flower Duet

Of this week's highlights and lowlights...

    20 Catatonia - Londinium *

Following up April's "Dead From The Waist Down" which made No.7, is a song which declares "London sucks". So, no love lost there then.

    17 The Cardigans - Hanging Around *

Third single from Nina and the band and another good track with a peformance in place of a decent video, so no expense spent.

    13 Dina Carroll - Without Love :O ===

New Dina Carroll song. Dire. Avoid. Still, at least it didn't get in the Top 10, although is that down to a complete cockup on CIN's part again? Who knows? If they do you can be sure they won't be owning up to it.

1 Ricky Martin - Livin' La Vida Loca *2nd Week at No.1*

Energetic Latino music and the sort of thing that sells a lot of records in summer, and in the past week it's really grown on me. The reason? It sounds exactly like the sort of thing Wax were doing around 12 years ago with their "American English" album. Anyone not familiar with Wax should note that they, Andrew Gold and Graham Gouldman, made up half of 10CC.

He's being sold over here as the next Big Thing to hit the UK, but if that's the case then why did he disappear off the face of the planet after his previous (and before this single, only) single, "Un, Dos, Tres, Maria" made No.6 in September 97. Why couldn't his record company have spared us the pain?

This is the 20th single to go straight in at No.1.

  • 1. Fatboy Slim - Praise You
  • 2. 911 - A Little Bit More
  • 3. Offspring - Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)
  • 4. Armand Van Helden featuring Duane Harden - You Don't Know Me
  • 5. Blondie - Maria
  • 6. Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away
  • 7. Britney Spears - Baby One More Time
  • 8. Boyzone - When The Going Gets Tough
  • 9. B*witched - Blame It On The Weatherman
  • 10. Mr Oizo - Flat Beat
  • 11. Martine McCutcheon - Perfect Moment
  • 12. Westlife - Swear It Again
  • 13. Backpassage Boys - I Like It That Way
  • 14. Boyzone - You Needed Me
  • 15. Shanks and Bigfoot - Sweet Like Chocolate
  • 16. Baz Luhrmann - Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)
  • 17. S Club 7 - Bring It All Back
  • 18. Vengaboys - Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!
  • 19. ATB - 9pm (Till I Come)
  • 20. Ricky Martin - Livin' La Vida Loca

    Dominator's Top 50 of 1998

    30. James - Runaground

Last year James released their greatest hits album, two of the new tracks being released as singles namely, "Destiny Calling" (No.17, Mar 98) and one just pipping it to the post as being the best, "Runaground" (No.29, June 98), a more sombre number.

They also released a dreadful remix of one of two songs I couldn't care less for, "Sit Down", which made No.7 in November 98. The other song I'm tired of is "Come Home".

    The end bit :

Well, that's it for now. If you want to be added to the Widescreen Video and Laserdisc lists, just mail me at Charts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
