  • 67 Lightning Seeds - Sweetest Soul Sensations

Of this week's highlights and lowlights...

67 Lightning Seeds - Sweetest Soul Sensations

If there was ever a band that needed a hit it's this lot. Time after time they produce excellent music, but it seems that if they're not singing about football then no-one's interested.

24 Lulu - Where the Poor Boys Dance

I had to laugh seeing Lulu on BBC Breakfast News saying how "great" it was that the midweek chart position was in the mid-20s. It's still there. I'd hate to think what she'd say if it had a chance of being in the top slot.

Of the song itself, it's not bad, but it sounds very much like a cover version but of whose original tune? Not one that's been in the charts before, that's for sure.

4 Tom Jones & Stereophonics - Mama Told Me Not To Come *

The track that I thought would be No.1 wasn't.

A cover of the superb Three Dog Night track which made No.3 in August 1970, this doesn't sound particularly dissimilar but it's still good and was performed at The Brits Awards 2000, and a full list of the winners can be found on this site (see left-hand side bar)

1 Chicane featuring Bryan Adams - Don't Give Up *1st Week at No.1*

Chicane remixed Adams' "Cloud 9" single so they thought they'd have another go here and it's clearly worked as it's reached No.1. It's not a bad song either once you get used to it and gladly not a dance cover of the classic Peter Gabriel/Kate Bush collaboration.

This track only came second in my No.1 Singles poll (see left-hand side bar) though, as more people thought Madonna would stick at No.1 for a second week. I thought Tom Jones might do it though.

This single is the 8th in a row to go straight in at No.1.

  • 1. Westlife - I Have a Dream / Seasons in the Sun
  • 2. Manic Street Preachers - The Masses Against the Classes
  • 3. Britney Spears - Born to Make You Happy
  • 4. Gabrielle - Rise
  • 5. Oasis - Go Let it Out
  • 6. All Saints - Pure Shores
  • 7. Madonna - American Pie
  • 8. Chicane featuring Bryan Adams - Don't Give Up

    Dominator's Top 50 of 1999

    11. ATB - 9pm (Till I Come)

Making No.1 in July last year, there's not a lot I can say about this other than it had been around in import form for quite a while and it's the song with a 'bendy synthesiser' sound that I'd heard many times but the radio station NEVER said who they were playing! (Don't you hate that?)

Probably the best dance track of the summer, although I think it's been around since the summer before.

It was followed by Don't Stop (No.3, Oct 99) and this week sees the release of a "Killer" cover version.

    The end bit :

Well, that's it for now. If you want to be added to the Widescreen Video and Laserdisc lists, just mail me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
