The initial bit :

In the last chart of 1998, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1999, I'll be going through the list one by one starting with the Top 10 in alphabetical order.

This week : 7 new entries, 3 climbers, 3 non-movers & 27 downers.

new entry re-entry climber faller non mover

CHART TIME !

(* - my current favourites)
(!!! - Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) - Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation...

7 new entries:

  • 34 Justin - It's All About You
  • 32 Orbital - Nothing Left
  • 26 The Goo Goo Dolls - Iris
  • 16 Gary Barlow - Stronger
  • 14 Beverley Knight - Greatest Day
  • 11 Manic Street Preachers - Tsunami
  • 1 Ricky Martin - Livin' La Vida Loca

so the following dropped out :

  • 40 Wiseguys - Ooh La La
  • 39 Cher - All or Nothing
  • 36 Aerosmith - Pink
  • 35 Charlotte Nilsson - Take Me To Your Heaven
  • 33 Jungle Brothers - VIP
  • 31 The Space Brothers - Legacy
  • 29 Celine Dion - Treat Her Like a Lady

    3 climbers :

  • 7 (9) Jennifer Lopez
  • 21 (22) Sporty Thievz
  • 37 (38) TLC

    3 non-movers :

  • 4 Whitney Houston
  • 10 Madonna
  • 13 Semisonic

    and 27 going down.

    Big fallers include :

  • 12 (6) Lolly
  • 18 (11) Blur
  • 20 (14) Mel G

New entries from No.41-75. See who missed out this time round :

  • 43 Ooberman - Million Suns
  • 48 Merz - Many Weathers Apart
  • 54 The Cranberries - Animal Instinct
  • 59 Peshay - Switch
  • 63 Dayeene - And it Hurts

Of this week's highlights and lowlights...

    16 Gary Barlow - Stronger

Well, it goes to show that if you piss your fans about by cancelling concerts and putting your album release back because it's "not ready", they won't thank you for it.

Instead why not just try releasing an album of crap songs, aside from one with involvement from the Pet Shop Boys, and watch all your singles jump into the Top 5 with ease...

1 Ricky Martin - Livin' La Vida Loca *1st Week at No.1*

Energetic Latino music and the sort of thing that sells a lot of records in summer, but it doesn't leave a lasting impression.

He's being sold over here as the next Big Thing to hit the UK, but if that's the case then why did he disappear off the face of the planet after his previous (and before this single, only) single, "Un, Dos, Tres, Maria" made No.6 in September 97. Why couldn't his record company have spared us the pain?

This is the 20th single to go straight in at No.1.

  • 1. Fatboy Slim - Praise You
  • 2. 911 - A Little Bit More
  • 3. Offspring - Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)
  • 4. Armand Van Helden featuring Duane Harden - You Don't Know Me
  • 5. Blondie - Maria
  • 6. Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away
  • 7. Britney Spears - Baby One More Time
  • 8. Boyzone - When The Going Gets Tough
  • 9. B*witched - Blame It On The Weatherman
  • 10. Mr Oizo - Flat Beat
  • 11. Martine McCutcheon - Perfect Moment
  • 12. Westlife - Swear It Again
  • 13. Backpassage Boys - I Like It That Way
  • 14. Boyzone - You Needed Me
  • 15. Shanks and Bigfoot - Sweet Like Chocolate
  • 16. Baz Luhrmann - Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)
  • 17. S Club 7 - Bring It All Back
  • 18. Vengaboys - Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!
  • 19. ATB - 9pm (Till I Come)
  • 20. Ricky Martin - Livin' La Vida Loca

    Dominator's Top 50 of 1998

    29. Indo - R U Sleeping

A one-hit wonder from April last year, this made No.31 and received plenty of airplay on Galaxy 102FM. At first I thought the chorus for this was "Are You Felippe", but now I know different.

Not a bad tune either and I never thought I'd spend most of my in-car radio-listening tuned to a dance music station. I still do listen to it a lot. Well, either them or Classic FM...

    The end bit :

Well, that's it for now. If you want to be added to the Widescreen Video and Laserdisc lists, just mail me at Charts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
