26 Neil Finn - She Will Have Her Way * !!!

One of my favourite bands came to an end in 1996 when Crowded House called it a day, with the members going their separate ways almost. Tim and Neil Finn carried on as Finn with an album and two singles in the UK, "Suffer Never" and "Angel's Heap".

"Recurring Dream" was the compilation album which was released in June 96, with limited edition copies containing an extra CD of live material. There were two new songs on it were released as singles. "Instinct" was the first, and it made No.12 in that month. The second was the slower, "Not The Girl You Think You Are" which made No.20 the following August, and their last single was a re-release of their first hit "Don't Dream It's Over" with a new video, making only No.25 that time round.

"She Will Have Her Way" is Neil Finn's first solo single since the break up and is a slow, but excellent tune and deserves a much higher placing than this but it won't get it. The only thing that does surprise me is that it got a Top 40 placing at all since UK radio stations tend to ignore anything remotely along the lines of Crowded House save for "Weather With You" which is the only thing they ever play.

21 Chumbawamba - Top Of The World (Ole, Ole, Ole) :O ===

The first of three football songs to enter the charts this week and this is the worst of the lot.

It's like a watered-down version of the overrated "Tubthumping" and sucks big time, the only thing making it football-like, save for the video, is the chorus of "Ole, Ole, Ole".

15 Del Amitri - Don't Come Home Too Soon

The second football song is the most depressing one of the lot. You won't find too many Scotland football fans chanting this slow suicide-inducing effort on the terraces.

They may as well have written 5 minutes of "You're going to lose anyway, so why bother entering".

9 England United - (How Does It Feel To Be) On Top Of The World

And the third football song of the week is the official England football team song, but despite the fact that it features the talents of Ian McCulloch and the lead singers of Ocean Colour Scene and Space, it's hardly the most catchy of songs around and certainly won't be sung on the terraces, unlike the two that will, both of which will be fighting it out for the top slot next week.

The other five 'artists' on the record are the Spice Girls (pre-Geri's split), proving yet again as they can't get another No.1 since their last single "Stop" did just that at No.2.

New Irish 4-piece female band, one of them being the sister of Shane from Boyzone, so they were destined for a hit anyway.

Cynicism aside, this is actually a very good poppy debut, up there in pop history with All Saints' "I Know Where It's At" and Spice Girls' "Wannabe", and since the Spice Girls could now be on their way out, this could be just the band to take over. After all, post-Take That, it's been Boyzone who's taken their limelight.

24. Gary Barlow - Open Road

This was the fourth single, and the the title track from the album, and is quite a jaunty pop song that sounds perhaps less in-depth than it actually is.

After the Take That split, he scored No.1 hits with "Forever Love" and "Love Won't Wait", but misfired with a cover of "So Help Me Girl" which made No.11. "Open Road" reached No.7 in November last year.
