The initial bit :

In the last chart of 1998, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1999, I'll be going through the list one by one starting with the Top 10 in alphabetical order.

This week : 11 new entries, 0 climbers, 0 non-movers & 29 downers.

new entry re-entry climber faller non mover

CHART TIME !

(* - my current favourites)
(!!! - Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) - Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation...

13 new entries :

  • 39 Ultrasound - Floodlit World
  • 38 Roger Taylor - Surrender
  • 34 Cypress Hill - Dr Greenthumb
  • 23 Bus Stop - Jump
  • 21 Bon Jovi - Real Life
  • 19 Beverley Knight - Made It Back 99
  • 16 Mariah Carey - I Still Believe
  • 15 Reef - I've Got Something To Say
  • 11 Another Level - Be Alone No More (remix)
  • 7 Catatonia - Dead From The Waist Down
  • 4 Various Artists - Thank Abba For The Music
  • 3 Phats & Small - Turn Around
  • 2 Eminem - My Name Is

so the following dropped out :

  • 40 DJ Sakin - Protect Your Mind
  • 39 Armand Van Halen - You Don't Know Me
  • 38 Stereophonics - Just Looking
  • 37 Cardigans - Erase/Rewind
  • 35 Madonna - Nothing Really Matters
  • 34 Brian Setzer Orchestra - Jump Jive N Wail
  • 33 The Beautiful South - How Long's a Tear Take To Dry
  • 32 Travis - Writing To Reach You
  • 31 Feeder - Day In Day Out
  • 30 Blondie - Maria
  • 28 Roxette - Wish I Could Fly

  • 16 Aphex Twin - Windowlicker

    0 climbers :

    2 non-movers :

  • 1 Mr Oizo
  • 36 Lenny Kravitz

    and 25 going down.

    Big fallers include :

  • 20 (10) Des'ree

New entries from No.41-75. See who missed out this time round :

  • 52 Fool Boona - Popped!
  • 53 Danny Tenaglia - Turn Me On
  • 56 Incognito -Nights Over Egypt
  • 59 Nine Yards - Matter Of Time
  • 63 Kathy Brown - Joy
  • 64 Technique - Sun is Shining
  • 75 Neils Van Gogh - Pulverturm

Of this week's highlights and lowlights...

    23 Bus Stop - Jump

Dance cover of the Van Halen classic. Haven't heard this, but if it's anything like their "Kung Fu Fighting" cover, I don't want to.

21 Bon Jovi - Real Life

Oh dear. Once they were a regular stalwart of the Top 5 with new singles, but let's hope this signals the end of their dry MOR run.

11 Another Level - Be Alone No More (remix)

Re-released for charidee. Take my advice and leave the single alone in the shops.

7 Catatonia - Dead From The Waist Down *

I've only heard this once, when they were on TFI Friday, and it's another top track. Certainly a lot better than most things in the chart.

4 Various Artists - Thank Abba For The Music

Did you see the Brits in February? I'm surprised they've taken so long to release this, but it's the Abba tribute you heard then, sung by Steps, Billie, Cleopatra and other one-name acts.

    1 Mr Oizo - Flat Beat :O === *1st Week at No.1*

Who is Mr. Oizo? Seen the Levi's ads with the puppet tapping away to a monotonous drum beat? That's the one. The puppet is "Flat Eric" and he is apparently the latest trend, such that everything containing his image, eg. T-shirts, are the hottest property in town.

    Sad. Sad. Sad.

This is the 10th single to go straight in at No.1.

  • 1. Fatboy Slim - Praise You
  • 2. 911 - A Little Bit More
  • 3. Offspring - Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)
  • 4. Armand Van Helden featuring Duane Harden - You Don't Know Me
  • 5. Blondie - Maria
  • 6. Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away
  • 7. Britney Spears - Baby One More Time
  • 8. Boyzone - When The Going Gets Tough
  • 9. B*witched - Blame It On The Weatherman
  • 10. Mr Oizo - Flat Beat

    15. The Cardigans - My Favourite Game

This track hung around for two months, but I thought it would have done better than it did, making No.14 in October last year. A fast-paced tune that's bound to stop the radio station playing "Love Fool" AGAIN! I wish they'd dump that one and play "Sick And Tired" instead. Much better.

About the video for "My Favourite Game", when I saw it on MTV it just showed singer Nina driving her car down the highway, but there's a better promo (four in all I understand) which features plenty of car crashes, ending with Nina "car-surfing", resulting in her crashing and landing on the ground. Perhaps that's the reason for her plaster cast.

It was followed up with "Erase/Rewind" (No.7, Mar 99) which was okay, but not really special and a rather dull video.

Next question: why does Nina sometimes look a complete babe, and at other times, when she's being interviewed, look like the complete opposite?

    The end bit :

Well, that's it for now. If you want to be added to the Widescreen Video and Laserdisc lists, just mail me at Charts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
